The Future of Social Media. At the beginning of the month I was asked to speak at a panel that discussed Social media, Social Networks and “What’s Coming Up Next”. In research for this discussion, I came up with a few insights on what I foresee coming up next in the world of social media. Here are my top 10 insights: 1) The physical and digital worlds will be more highly connected than ever before – already today we are able to run in the park and track our progress online while sharing it with our friends or track our weight loss, or even our ovulation (well, some of us, that is) with iPhone apps that connect to our Facebook and twitter profiles and enable us to keep track of our progress as well as share the data with our friends.

Robert Scoble had a brilliant presentation on this topic at the last TNW Conference in Amsterdam. You can see it here. 2) Facebook, Twitter and other major social networks will become increasingly what Fred Wilson coins “Social Dashboards”. Gartner’s Top Ten Strategic Technologies for 2011. *I always pay attention to these Gartner guys. Because, even though they’re commonly wrong, other people are much, much wronger.

The top 10 strategic technologies for 2011 include: Cloud Computing…. (((Yeah, okay, fine, fine, never mind that one, let’s move along))) Mobile Applications and Media Tablets…. (((ditto))) Social Communications and Collaboration…. Video. Technology trends in digital photography, consumer electronics, the web, social software, unified communications, digital and Internet-based television and mobile computing are all reaching critical tipping points that bring video into the mainstream. Over the next three years Gartner believes that video will become a commonplace content type and interaction model for most users, and by 2013, more than 25 percent of the content that workers see in a day will be dominated by pictures, video or audio.

We all know that the internet is a busy place, but computer wizards have worked out that it's actually a lot busier than we ever thought. So busy, in fact, that it will make your head spin. In just 60 seconds Google will deal with nearly 700,000 queries, 168,000,000 emails will be sent and 98,000 tweets tweeted on Twitter.

And that's just for starters. The infographic below, produced by Go-Globe.com, gives a mind-blowing snapshot of 60 seconds in the life of the internet. And savvy communicators have cottoned on to the wonders of Skype, which grants free voice calls to fellow users over the internet - with more than 370,000 minutes of calls being made every 60 seconds. In Britain alone last year, 30.1 million adults (60 percent) accessed the internet every day or almost every day. . © Daily Mail, London 168,000,000+ emails are pinged. 695,000 status updates, 79,364 wall posts and 510,040 comments are published on Mark Zuckerberg's social networking site Facebook.
