Self-balancing scooters, like the Segway™ are often thought to be technological miracles, but it is not actually very hard to build one.

Balancing Scooter

I built the one described here in about a week using off-the-shelf parts. I spent another week tweaking the high-speed stability, improving the steering control, and writing about it. Although the Segway has several exotic components, mine is built from common low-tech parts like wheelchair motors and RC car batteries. Tropical Island resort built inside German aircraft hangar. In the social sciences, unintended consequences (sometimes unanticipated consequences or unforeseen consequences) are outcomes that are not the ones intended by a purposeful action.

Unintended consequences

The term was popularised in the 20th century by American sociologist Robert K. Merton.[1] Unintended consequences can be roughly grouped into three types: A positive, unexpected benefit (usually referred to as luck, serendipity or a windfall).A negative, unexpected detriment occurring in addition to the desired effect of the policy (e.g., while irrigation schemes provide people with water for agriculture, they can increase waterborne diseases that have devastating health effects, such as schistosomiasis).A perverse effect contrary to what was originally intended (when an intended solution makes a problem worse) History[edit] What is the Source of Innovation? Posted by: Bruce Nussbaum on December 22, 2009 Don Norman, a rare intellect and a major godfather of Design, has launched a provocative broadside against Design that has enormous implications for building an innovative society.

What is the Source of Innovation?

Norman tells designers to get over themselves. It is science and technology that drive truly disruptive innovation, not Design’s focus on the needs and wants of people. Intrapreneurship is the act of behaving like an entrepreneur while working within a large organization.

Intrapreneurship

Definition[edit] In 1992, The American Heritage Dictionary acknowledged the popular use of a new word, intrapreneur, to mean "A person within a large corporation who takes direct responsibility for turning an idea into a profitable finished product through assertive risk-taking and innovation".[1] Intrapreneurship is now known as the practice of a corporate management style that integrates risk-taking and innovation approaches, as well as the reward and motivational techniques, that are more traditionally thought of as being the province of entrepreneurship. History[edit] The first written use of the terms ‘intrapreneur’, ‘intrapreneuring,’ and ‘intrapreneurship’ date from a paper[2] written in 1978 by Gifford and Elizabeth Pinchot. Team Notes - The Rules of Brainstorming

It's about setting a safe, creative space for people to feel like they can say anything, be wild, not be judged – so that new ideas can be born. Traditionally, the group brainstorm is an activity to generate ideas in-person. With OpenIDEO, the community is turning that model on its head by creating a digital space where ideas spark and fly. We're excited to see the Ideas phase turning into this new form of digital brainstorming. Moving Windmills. Caine's Arcade.
