Rebuilding conservative coalition in Alberta a job like no other in Canadian politics - Calgary

He hasn't officially entered the race, but unveiling his plan will allow people a chance to assess that. The outline of what he needs to do seems clear: Kenney needs to win the leadership of a party — the Progressive Conservatives — he has spent years deriding. He has to negotiate a merger with or a takeover of the Opposition Wildrose Party.

Blast from past: Jason Kenney trumpets endorsement from 50 former MLAs - Edmonton. In his bid to lead Alberta's Progressive Conservative party into an uncharted future, leadership candidate Jason Kenney appears to have a solid grip on the party's storied past.

Blast from past: Jason Kenney trumpets endorsement from 50 former MLAs - Edmonton

The Kenney campaign published an alphabetical list on Wednesday of 50 former Tory MLAs said to be backing their candidate. Under PC party rules, the statement said, all former PC MLAs who are Alberta residents have automatic delegate status, which will allow them to vote at the leadership convention in March. Among the names are former cabinet ministers Steve West, Stockwell Day, Ty Lund, Ron Liepert and Ted Morton.

There are six women on the list. Is Jason Kenney unbeatable? Why some think Tory leadership race in Alberta may already be over. With votes starting to be cast in the Progressive Conservative leadership race, a question is already hanging over the contest: Is Jason Kenney unbeatable?

Is Jason Kenney unbeatable? Why some think Tory leadership race in Alberta may already be over

While the former MP’s leadership campaign has run into controversy at times, Kenney is claiming sweeps or near-sweeps in the delegate selection meetings that have taken place so far — an assertion scoffed at by his opponents. And while running as an outsider on a pledge to unite the PCs and Wildrose members in a new “Conservative Party of Alberta,” Kenney burnished his party credentials this week by unveiling endorsements from more than 50 former Tory MLAs.

It adds up to a sense of momentum — and some say inevitability — around Kenney’s campaign, even with the party’s leadership convention nearly four months away. Donna Kennedy-Glans, the former PC cabinet minister who dropped out of the leadership race earlier this month before voting had even started, said the writing is on the wall for an easy Kenney victory. Denis: Take a page from federal politics and unite Alberta’s right. Welcome to 2019. Alberta has just gone through another election campaign. After four years of left-leaning (or “progressive”) policies, the NDP government maintains its core vote. However, many are unhappy with the direction of Alberta’s financial situation and migrate over to the Wildrose and back to the Progressive Conservatives — but not enough to stop a second NDP majority government.
