Facebook, It's Time To Kill the Poke

Would we really miss it? Last week, when launching the new Facebook subscribe button, the social network hid the much-maligned "Poke" button behind a settings menu, making it pretty unlikely that visitors to your profile page will see it. Guess what: Facebook users didn't notice. While there was a minor backlash about the new real-time Ticker at the top of the site, not to mention the Top News section at the top of your news feed, only a handful of eagle-eyed bloggers noticed that the Poke button had virtually been retired. This from a community that balks at the slightest change. What's more, Facebook's huge upcoming redesign (Facebook Timeline) keeps the Poke button behind this same dropdown menu — there are no plans to make it visible again.

Here's my problem with the poke: What the heck does it mean? QR Stuff: Free Printable QR Code Generator, Creator And Encoder For T-Shirts, Labels & Stickers.

In addition, it found that of those investing in social media marketing, 40% will shift more than a fifth of their traditional direct marketing budget toward social channels. The findings come from Alterian's seventh annual survey, which interviewed 1,068 marketing professionals worldwide.

It found that of the 66% investing in social, 67% felt that social media is either “increasingly important” or “critical to success.” “This is showing an increasing professionalism in marketing,” said Bob Barker, VP of corporate marketing at Alterian. The survey also found that more than a third of respondents (36%) are investing in social media monitoring and analysis tools. Hey Washington Post — It’s Called Social Media. It’s been awhile since we had a blow-up among traditional media entities about using Twitter and other social media, but now the Washington Post has provided yet another compelling example of how newspapers in particular aren’t really getting the whole “social” aspect of the social-media phenomenon.

Hey Washington Post — It’s Called Social Media

This was easy to forgive a year or two ago, when Twitter was relatively new, and social media was unfamiliar territory, but it’s really hard to cut the Washington Post or its brethren much slack at this point. Now it almost seems like they don’t want to get it. The issue this time, according to a report from Washington-based news startup TBD, was an editor using the newspaper’s Twitter account to defend the Post’s decision to run a particular column. The Post hasn’t provided any details, but TBD says that the complaint came from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), which was upset about a column written by an anti-gay activist that ran in the paper’s faith section.
