Namesake Wants to Be Facebook for the Self-Employed

Namesake, a startup based in Los Angeles and run by two of the founders of the social advertising platform Ad.ly, wants to be that service. The company made its public debut at TechCrunch’s Disrupt conference on Monday, although the service itself is still in private beta. Namesake is the third startup for the two co-founders: Dan Gould and Brian Norgard. They built a news aggregation service called Newroo that used algorithms to parse news content and find relationships. Facebook's $50m data center bill. Facebook’s data center costs have more than doubled in just over a year, according to estimates.Data Center Knowledge reports that Facebook is now spending $50 million a year to lease data center space, compared to $20 million in May 2009.

The leap in costs is not surprising given that the social networking site has grown from 200 million users worldwide in mid 2009 to 500 million now. Over the past year, Facebook has added multiple data centers in Ashburn, Virginia and Silicon Valley in California. Department of Defense announced a new policy which allows all users of unclassified computers in the .mil domain access to popular social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube among others. This change in policy effectively reverses the previous ban on accessing these types of sites - a ban that had been in place for nearly three years. In embracing the new policy, the department also launched its own social media hub, a blog-like site complete with live Twitter feeds, Tweetmeme buttons and "share on Facebook" links. And in case you thought they weren't serious, it's also worth noting (as spotted by the New York Times) that news of this announcement broke on the Twitter feed of Price Floyd, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, and not via a traditional press release.
