Inline remote controls for iOS devices that work with your current headphones. Problem: You like the inline remote and microphone functions built into the headphones that come with the iPhone, but if you want to use another pair of headphones, you lose that functionality. Solution 1: Ditch your current headphones for another set with built-in controls and a mic. Solution 2: Keep your current headphones and find an adapter.

Over the past couple years, I've spent far more time using Apple's pack-in headphones than I might have otherwise, simply because the inline remote functions are so useful. Meanwhile, my all-time favorite set of earphones, the Shure E2c, gathered dust unless I was doing something like mowing the lawn or working out at the gym. The sound I get from my Shures is vastly superior to the pack-in headphones, but pulling my iPhone out of my pocket to control music, answer phone calls or adjust the volume isn't always convenient. Phonak Audeo PFE 232 Perfect fit review. Phonak is one of the world's largest hearing aid manufacturers, so it's safe to say it knows more about sound than your average startup or celebrity-endorsed manufacturer that's just now dipping their toes into the lucrative headphone market.

Phonak launched the Audeo brand four years ago, and its headphones are now widely distributed in Europe, but the U.S. ramp up has been slow. The company offers a complete line of earphones, with prices starting at $119 for the PFE 012 all the way up to $599 for the PFE 232. All Audeo earphones are exceptionally comfortable, but the PFE 232's excellent sound to boot earns it a solid recommendation that competes with the very best in-ear models. Design and features I expected lavish build quality from this $599 headphone, with something special like pure titanium earpieces or silver cables, but the PFE 232 is just a black and gray plastic headphone. You get three sets of color-coded filters: gray, black, and green. ADL X1: This gizmo will pump up the sound of your iPhone. Over the past year or so we've seen a new product category emerge: the portable digital converter/headphone amplifier. Of course, no one "needs" such a device -- phones and iPods already have converters and amps built-in -- and sound perfectly fine with average headphones.

The sound is good enough, but your phone's converter and amp share space and battery power with the phone's electronics. A separate converter and amp, about the size of a phone, has only one mission: improved sound quality. So if you upgraded to a high-end in-ear headphone, like the $399 Logitech UE 900, or a full-size Hifiman HE-400 , you'll be in a position to hear what the ADL X1 converter/amp brings to the party. The ADL X1 handles 16-bit/48kHz digital audio via USB cable when connected to an iPod, iPhone and iPad, or 24-bit/192-kHz audio via USB with Macs or PCs (the X1 doesn't work with Androids or other phones). The ADL X1 is available online for $479. Is there a master list anywhere of iPhone 5 compatible DACs? Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit (MC531ZM/A): Computers & Accessories. Astell&Kern AK10 Portable Smartphone DAC – Amplifiers, DAC’s, Macro, Reviews | TONEAudio MAGAZINE. In the past year, a healthy section of the audiophile headphone community has gone gaga for iRiver’s Astell&Kern AK100 and AK120 portable media players. And rightly so—they’re both terrific. But what if you are committed to music playback on your phone or you want to extract better sound quality from MOG, Spotify, Rdio or Pandora? Cheekily borrowing from KEF’s exhortation to “Hi-fi your computer,” Astell&Kern is now inviting us to hi-fi our smartphones.

The South Korean manufacturer has essentially gutted its AK100, stripped out the file storage and playback and shrunk it down to the size of a matchbox. An elastic band straps the AK10 to the back of your phone, and the device’s diminutive size doesn’t impede taking a phone call while on the move. There’s just enough juice on tap for Mr. Astell&Kern supplies a USB OTG (on-the-go) cable for Android phone users. The AK10’s internal rechargeable battery means it won’t burden your smartphone with power draw.

iOS 7 + iPhone 5 talk digital to ALO Audio's International DAC/amp. No, ALO Audio’s International isn’t new and no it hasn’t seen any updates. It’s still a handheld DAC and headphone amplifying combo unit. It still promises 8-10 hours of the on-the-go DAC+amp action between charges. It still handles both single-ended and balanced connections. Its internal DAC still deals up to 24bit/96kHz. It’s still available in black or silver and it still sells for US$599. However, a fluke (?)

Of Cupertino-coding in iOS 7 means the iPhone 5 can now talk directly and digitally to ALO’s handheld DAC/amp combo. “Prior to iOS 7, the International was unable to take the digital stream from an iPhone, and you had to use things like this $699 Cypher Labs Solo. “Pretty cool”? You can see more on how this all cables together in ALO Audio’s rough and ready video. This trick looks set to work with the iPad Mini and later generations of the iPad, essentially any model with the Lightning connector.

IPHONE 5 / iPad Mini Memory Card Expansion External Camera Connection Kit USB TF SD Attachment. How to Connect Android, iPad, or iPhone to a DAC | JDS Labs Blog. There are three basic requirements to connect a USB DAC to any Android or iDevice: Power: The DAC must not consume more power than the phone or tablet permits.Support: The phone or tablet must be able to stream digital audio over USB.Cables: You must use an appropriate cable for your device.

Below we’ll show how you can connect a USB DAC to most Androids, iPads, and iPhones. All iPad, iPhone, and most Android devices enforce a peripheral power consumption limit. If you have a self-powered DAC like C5D, this requirement is easily satisfied since the DAC only consumes power from its own battery. Connecting a more common, power hungry DAC is still possible! For example, directly connecting ODAC to an iPhone or iPad does not work. Power consumption has not actually changed here since we’re using a non-powered USB hub; ODAC still draws power from the iPhone.

A powered USB hub would be more ideal, but this experiment shows it’s possible to fool the software power limitations. Android Summary. Metallo Apple iPhone 5/5s Case. V-Moda's outrageously sweet portable DAC and headphone amp. I've reviewed a number of portable headphone amps over the years, but they just took the analog output of a phone or MP3 player and made it sound better. Ideally, you want to totally bypass the player's digital converters, but up until recently that was a very expensive proposition . The V-Moda Vamp Verza cuts the price to less than half, and works with iPhones, iPads, and iPods, as well as Androids and computers.

I'm really impressed with the little Vamp Verza's sound. The look and concept were designed by V-Moda's Val Kolton in Milan, Italy, but the Vamp Verza is one of the few audio devices that's still made in Japan. It's a great looking piece of gear, but since it's really designed to be used in tandem with a phone, Kolton also designed the machined Metallo case ($101) specifically for iPhones or Samsung Galaxys.

The Verza and Metallo case together form a sleek phone/audio system. My Jerry Harvey JH13 in-ear headphones with the Vamp Zerza were a terrific combination. ONE for iPad & Mac - Headphone & DAC - Apogee Electronics. USB DAC review: Six compact components for upgrading your computer’s audio. I’ve got some bad news: Those nice headphones and great speakers that you spent so much money on? They probably don’t sound as good as they could. You spent the time searching for the best audio gear for your computer, and no one wants to get less than what they paid for. Not sure what I mean? Let me explain. But by its nature, this digital-to-analog-conversion process isn’t exact, so some DACs produce a higher-quality facsimile of the original recorded signal than others.

If you’ve invested in quality headphones or upgraded your speakers, you can use an external DAC to help those components reach their full potential; many external DACs also include significantly better headphone amplification—you use the DAC’s own headphone jack instead of the one on your computer. Inconspicuous offerings I gathered six such products, ranging in price from $149 to $300. FiiO E06 Fujiyama. I got the E6 to use with an older model Nano. I was shocked at how small it really is. I also got the docking cable that kills the iPod's internal amp. That makes a big difference. I fasten it to the back of the Nano with a piece of velcro and it stays in place well.Because of the tiny size it is a little difficult to figure out which EQ setting you are on, but I just click it until I find the one that I like.

I tried it with my SE530, my Klipsch X10 and my Klipsch S4. The X10 seemed to get the most out of it as it smoothed some rough ends and firmed up the low end a bit. FiiO E02i Rocky. FiiO.
