It got a very warm reception from the press, users and the industry (investors, partners, etc). In this email I discuss coming up with the idea or building the product–that’s almost a book’s worth of information (hint, hint ;-), but I will discuss the moment from when the product is completed, through the beta test, generating buzz, the press tour and launch. Background ================ Mahalo Answers is a knowledge exchange with a virtual currency that can be exchanged for real dollars.

For context, this is the third of Mahalo’s five pillars. Now, on to the process. Simple. 1. How To Pitch Your Startup To The Press. Here's how most startups that never get written about approach reporters: Let's say you're working on a new payments system that is obviously better than PayPal in every way, and is therefore a lock to become a multi-billion dollar business within a few years. So, you punch 'PayPal' into Google News, and just like that, you have a list of people who have written stories about PayPal recently. Then you type up an email that starts with "I read your article about PayPal the other day. Very interesting! Since you're interested in PayPal, I thought you might like to know... " You paste in your standard pitch, then you send this email to everyone on your list. The appeal of this system is obvious -- it lets you reach a lot of reporters in a limited amount of time.

Choosing a target Avoid the temptation to pitch the person you'd most like to have write about you. Pay attention to who writes interesting things in your industry. Pitch a story, not your company. Pourquoi pas moi. PR for Startups – Tony Wright dot com. My startup (RescueTime) has enjoyed some pretty ridiculously good PR (online, print, and video). It’s not a surprise that the most common questions that we get from other founders are about PR. How do you get press and the blogosphere talking about your product? When you research this topic, you’ll see lots of technical and how-to articles that talk about how to build relationships with writers, how to use services like PRweb, how to format a press release, and more.

In a lot of ways, this reminds me of SEO (search engine optimization). Research SEO and you’ll find a bunch of articles about page markup, link sculpting, meta descriptions, and all sorts of other mechanical processes. But what you won’t find much of is information that teaches you how to write great content and how to build your startup and features (from the ground up) with “linkworthiness” in mind. Just like fabulous content solves 75% of your SEO problems, fabulous storytelling solves 75% of your PR problems. Relations presse. Mario Sundar's answer to What are tips for coming across as calm and sharp while being interviewed on live TV.

This most definitely isn’t the first time a friend has reached out for this kind of advice. I figured a number of people could benefit from it, so I’ll just post some of the questions and my answers here. This definitely isn’t completely comprehensive, but it’s my 2 cents on some of the basics… If you go on Quora, there is tons of good information for individual publications.
