The Rise and Fall of Skeuomorphic Design. Do you carry an imaginary spiral-bound notepad? Do you take notes on intangible post-it notes? On its launch, the rich visual interface of the iPhone was unparalleled, especially on a phone. However, as times changed, and new kids on the block like Android and Windows gained popularity, skeuomorphic design started to look tacky and feel stale. These days like many other designers, I’ve found myself turning away from shadows, textures and 3D effects in favour of flatter, cleaner design. That said, flat design is nothing new. Popular programs are out there, but many of them have considerable drawbacks, which has led me to explore alternative apps. I eventually chose Adobe InDesign for much of my preliminary interaction design work. Yes, you read that correctly: InDesign, a desktop publishing app originally created for designing books and magazines, is currently my tool of choice for designing low- to medium-fidelity wireframes and interactive prototypes. Slowly but surely, InDesign has evolved from a print-only tool into an application that can produce interactive media for the iPad and eReaders, too. Surprisingly, it has built-in tools for creating interactivity and animation within your spreads. Common kinds of debris include satellites that have reached the end of their lives; the rocket stages used to place satellites in orbit; bolts and other objects released during satellite deployments (known as mission-related debris); and fragments from the intentional or accidental breakup of large objects. It also includes the rare failed spacecraft that has stalled in orbit, such as the Russian Phobos–Grunt probe, which was bound for a Martian moon but instead is expected to crash to Earth in the coming days.

Using Satspy4.0, a great little program that's no longer available, I made the following image of about 5000 catalogued satellites and pieces of junk.
If you were a thousand miles above the earth, and could see the satellites with your teeny eyes, you'd see something like this: My dataset is actually only the catalogued items, and doesn't include real space junk like gloves, hammers, bolts, bags of trash, etc. So multiply the density you see here by a factor of ten or so, and that's closer to reality. From ten thousand or so miles up, you'd see everything catalogued in LEO, low earth orbit, where incidently, the International Space Station stays. As part of my residence at the Swedish Traveling Exhibitions, on November 6 I visited Mejan Labs, an art space dedicated to supporting projects that critically reflect on diverse forms of technology.
The art space is located in the heart of the city of Stockholm. Director Peter Hagdahl and Curator Björn Norberg greeted me upon my arrival. At the time of my visit, Mejan Labs featured three works that focused on Astronomy, or on the earth in some abstract form. The McKinsey Global Institute just released a fascinating new iPad app, Urban World. Urban World provides users with a visually engaging way to explore urbanization for over 2,600 cities. You can read more about the project in detail right here. The app also places urbanization in a historical context, using a view from space of the global nighttime distribution of light as a proxy for the global distribution of economic activity. Users can visualize the world’s shifting center of economic gravity during the past two millennia, to 2025. The app serves a purpose similar to a 16th-century map—a rough but helpful tool to help navigate the evolving urban world.
