Bradley Manning - who was recently charged with aiding the enemy - stands accused of leaking thousands of classified documents that ultimately ended up on WikiLeaks. If found guilty, the former army intelligence analyst will likely spend the rest of his life in a military prison without the chance of parole. A total of 22 charges have been leveled against Manning including: wrongfully causing intelligence to be published on the Internet; theft of public property or records; transmitting defense information; and fraud and related activity in connection with computers.
Perhaps not unsurprisingly, defense attorney David Coombs is seeking to dismiss or at least reduce some of the charges at a pre-trial hearing slated to kick off this week. There are many people who have been engaged in this struggle for decades, waiting for the moment when the young people would join them on the front lines and enough people stood up for change. Unfortunately, the rapid growth of the Occupy movement made it impossible to explain the basic dynamics of political struggle to all of these new activists. The District Attorney has recently filed charges against some of the people arrested on December 12th and 30th.
However, they have not notified people that these charges have been filed. This means that if you were arrested at any point during Occupy Oakland and your charges were not filed during an arraignment, there is still a possibility that the charges have now been filed and there is a warrant for your arrest. Therefore, if you have been arrested, you should call the District Attorney immediately to determine the status of your case. The DA’s number is: 510-268-7500. If you find out that charges have been filed, immediately call the National Lawyers Guild to discuss your legal options. If you call the District Attorney and charges have not been filed, this does not necessarily mean that you are in the clear.

If a citizen is found to be engaging in violence against another person or their property you have the right to arrest that person and give them a fair trial. You do NOT have the right to use tear gas against a public gathering of American citizens who are exercising their Constitutional right to the Freedom of Assembly. If you allow police to tear gas American war veterans, I will stand against you. If you are an elected official of the people of America, and you authorize or condone the police use of tear gas, tazers, firearms, rubber bullets, police brutality or other violent and potentially lethal means against American citizens, I will stand against you. I consider this freedom to be a non-negotiable. Frankly, Madame Mayor, your police force is out of control and you are entirely out of your element. And this, dear Mayor, only adds insult to injury.
