How I do it, where I do it, what pins I have...how I manage the big stuff. There's lots of opinions on this, and many clever people have written about it. I'd Like To Use A Lifeline. Lining the scarf. This TECHknitting series on curing curling stockinette scarves has looked at the problem, at solutions which don't work, and at two solutions which do work: drop-columns and transforming stockinette into ribbing.

lining the scarf

Today's poster child for curling is a multi-blue scarf. Although you can't tell in its wound-up state, this scarf has two tapered ends and an applied edging. Drop columns or forming ribbing would mean taking off, then reapplying the edging and unraveling, plus re-knitting one whole end--a LOT of work. Further, with no excess yarn in stash, re-knitting and re-edging is a doubtful proposition: every inch of un-picked and unraveled yarn would have to be in perfect shape after unkinking for this scarf to come back together. Very risky! Of course, this isn't the only sort of scarf which cannot be fabric-reworked. LINING--materials LINING--how to Here's how the multi-blue scarf was lined. When bits of fibers separate from a strand of yarn and then are agitated repeatedly (such as in the underarm of a sweater), they turn into small balls, called pills. Pilling bothers some people more than others, but I would venture to say that it bugs us all a little bit! There are some pretty neat pill-remover tools out there these days, such as the Gleener, but what if you could cut down on pills from the get-go?

In the Winter 20113 issue of knit.wear, yarn expert Clara Parkes (who's also known as the "Yarn Whisperer"), tells us how to choose yarns that might not pill as much as others, and how to knit them to avoid pilling even more! Tips for Identifying Pill-Prone Yarns Does the label list a high percentage of luxury fibers? Does the skein have a high nap along its surface? P.S. Double Knitting - Knitting Community.
