Researchers at Cambridge University have developed a cool augmented reality app called Popcode. An update to the app recently made it available for iPhone 4 and Android, and the app is being featured at the University of Cambridge Science festival being held this week and next. Before we say much about the app, take a look at a one-minute demonstration for yourself: As an augmented reality application, Popcode's central innovation is that it's "markerless"; after unlocking the content by scanning the Popcode logo, additional content can be added onto just about anything.
T-shirts seems to be a favorite of the team; here's another one: Games can be rendered out of anything, though. Audio content can be added, too. Extra Reality is the name of the company behind the app; it's composed of Simon Taylor, Connell Gauld, and Dr. It's a shame Popcode isn't better known; its forums page is MIA. I wrote Gauld to ask what was new with Popcode, and unfortunately he had to stay mostly mum. Over-Branding Kills Profits And Scares Off Consumers | Co.Design. Consumers are obese, but not in the way you might think. They're over-served and over-branded. They're stuffed to the gills with logos. The average U.S. supermarket, one right down the road from you, sells as many as 50,000 products. There are 16 varieties of Tropicana Pure Premium juices alone, for example, and PepsiCo will probably up it to 30 before long. That's over-service. We don't need it. Recently, BlackBerry introduced Super Apps, apps that do what any app does, only a hair better. Too much choice doesn't free us, it numbs us. At a hotel I stayed in a while ago, there was a overly designed tag hanging on the shower head. Trivial choices, too little time What we do need is quality, not quantity. Psychologists are saying that too much choice doesn't free us, it numbs us.
Fewer brands, more profit But maybe you're thinking, it's the free market, this is business, it's about money. That's exactly the point. When P&G cut Head and Shoulders from from 25 to 16 products, profits rose 10%. How To Set Up A Foursquare Special. The location-based service offered more options for specials—and made it quicker and easier to set them up. To date, more than 250,000 small and large businesses have signed up on Foursquare's free platform for businesses; many of these have offered specials.
The beauty of a Foursquare special—aside from rewarding your customers and getting them back in the door—is that users often check out the "Specials Nearby" menu when they first open the app. 1. Once you've claimed your venue on Foursquare, go to Foursquare.com. Click on "Manager Tools"Click on "Campaigns"Click on "Start a Campaign"Click on "Add a Special" The new specials are broken up into two types—five that reward new customers, and two that incentivize existing customers to return. Social Media Trends in 2011. Although 2010 saw an increase in brands using social technologies, most posts on Facebook Pages and Twitter accounts were merely announcements or redirects to a corporate website. As companies become more familiar with the etiquette and overall landscape of the Social Web, 2011 will see a truer form of engagement between business and consumer.
My predictions - with some personal hope mixed in: Businesses open up... finally Brands will move past monitoring social chatter and repurposing corporate snippets from their websites on to social profiles. Commercialization of the Social Web Is history repeating itself? Location apps target new industries While socially checking in to a favorite store and receiving an immediate discount via text or some other messaging technology is fun, geo-location applications will begin to target other industries with different needs.
