On the July 9th 2009 we launched a complete redesign of Carsonified and the Think Vitamin blog. I thought it’d be fun to tell you the story of how the new site design evolved and came to life. It was an interesting journey. As the designers among you will know, working on your personal or company site can be a nightmare. It’s always super hard to get right … or finished.
This post isn’t so much about the final design as it’s about the journey I embarked on to get there … and I stopped off at some weird and wondrous places on the way. The Brief We’ve been talking about the redesign of Carsonified.com since December 2008. The homepage had to communicate what we did.It had to express our company’s personality and beliefs.It had to include the following pages: Home, Events, Mission, Jobs, Contact and TeamThink Vitamin was going to sit within the Carsonified site (whilst retaining it’s own identity). Web Design Standards. One of the neatest things about CSS Transforms is that they change the hit area of an element to whatever transformed value we set.
So, if we rotate an element, the hit area for that element doesn’t stay a box in the defined X and Y plane; it changes to the transformed shape. CSS Transformed Hit Box. Overcoming Inspiration Overload. We've all heard of information overload, and most of us recognize that too much data overwhelms rather than educates.
It kills our efficiency and distracts us from important tasks. With so much information at our fingertips, even small decisions become difficult. I can lose hours of time on Good Reads sifting through reviews trying to decide what book I should read next. It's fun and interesting, and my choice is well-informed, but I used to visit the library and choose something off the shelf in 5-10 minutes. Drawn. Science. Business. Bands That Jam. YMSB @ The Landing 8.16.11. I had the privilege of seeing Yonder Mountain String Band, one of my favorites, on August 16th in Peoria on the banks of the Illinois River.
Before arriving at the venue, Jay Miller (photographer) and I stopped at Richard’s for a quick bite to eat. We stepped outside for some fresh air before our food arrived and were treated to the sight of Jeff Austin, Yonder’s mandolin player, walking by on a jaunt through downtown Peoria. We hollered hello and he waved and continued on his way as cool as a cucumber. That was definitely a highlight of our night and really pumped us up for the show. After a delicious dinner we made our way down to the CEFCU Center Stage at the Landing on the riverfront. Austin, Dave Johnston (banjo), Ben Kaufmann (bass), and Adam Aijala (guitar) started their first set right on time with “Steep Grades, Sharp Curves,†which had the crowd singing along and starting to dance. The band definitely showed off this diversity in their second set. Gallery: UV Hippo. Ultraviolet Hippopotamus is a five piece rock band from Grand Rapids, Michigan whose strength in original compositions and ability in effortlessly flowing from one genre to another has made them a captivating force in the midwest music scene. The energy, crowd banter and light show make this band hard to ignore. It started in the summer of ’04 when a few friends from Big Rapids, Michigan got together for a few low-key jam sessions. Before they knew it, they had established a couple of sets of music containing fun covers and even some original musings. As they tried to settle on a name for their new group, they stumbled across a story containing a fictional band with the name, Ultraviolet Hippopotamus. They felt it worked as a pefect represetation of the ridiculousness nature of the band… and so it stuck. The original collaboration of Brian Samuels, Travis Compton, Sam Guidry, Cameron Rye and Joe Phillion become the collective, Ultraviolet Hippopotamus. (uvhippomusic.com)
