Dr. Fu Manchu is a fictional character introduced in a series of novels by British author Sax Rohmer during the first half of the 20th century. The character was also featured extensively in cinema, television, radio, comic strips and comic books for over 90 years, and has become an archetype of the evil criminal genius while lending the name to the Fu Manchu moustache . Arthur Henry Sarsfield Ward (15 February 1883 – 1 June 1959), better known as Sax Rohmer , was a prolific English novelist . He is best remembered for his series of novels featuring the master criminal Dr. Fu Manchu . [ edit ] Life and work Born in Birmingham to a working class family, Rohmer initially pursued a career as a civil servant before concentrating on writing full-time. He worked as a poet, songwriter, and comedy sketch writer in Music Hall before creating the Sax Rohmer persona and pursuing a career writing weird fiction.

The Fu Manchu moustache, as worn by the eponymous fictional character. A Fu Manchu moustache is a full, straight moustache that grows downward past the lips and on either side of the chin; and often, the tapered, pointed ends of the moustache hang past the jawline. [ 1 ] The Fu Manchu is similar to the common horseshoe ("biker") moustache; the difference between the two types of moustache is that the Fu Manchu is grown only from the upper lip, whilst the sides remain clean shaven. The Fu Manchu moustache derives its name from Fu Manchu , the fictional character who wears such a moustache in film versions of the stories written by the British author Sax Rohmer ; the literary Fu Manchu did not wear a moustache.
