Fu manchu. Fu Manchu. Dr. Fu Manchu is a fictional character introduced in a series of novels by British author Sax Rohmer during the first half of the 20th century. The character was also featured extensively in cinema, television, radio, comic strips and comic books for over 90 years, and has become an archetype of the evil criminal genius while lending the name to the Fu Manchu moustache. Characters[edit] Fu Manchu[edit] "Imagine a person, tall, lean and feline, high-shouldered, with a brow like Shakespeare and a face like Satan, ... one giant intellect, with all the resources of science past and present ... A master criminal, Fu Manchu's murderous plots are marked by the extensive use of arcane methods; he disdains guns or explosives, preferring dacoits, Thuggee, and members of other secret societies as his agents armed with knives, or using "pythons and cobras ... fungi and my tiny allies, the bacilli ... my black spiders" and other peculiar animals or natural chemical weapons.

Denis Nayland Smith and Dr. Sax Rohmer. Arthur Henry Sarsfield Ward (15 February 1883 – 1 June 1959), better known as Sax Rohmer, was a prolific English novelist. He is best remembered for his series of novels featuring the master criminal Dr. Fu Manchu.[1] Life and work[edit] Born in Birmingham to a working-class Irish Catholic family, he had an entirely working class education and early career before beginning to write.

Rohmer initially pursued a career as a civil servant before concentrating on writing full-time. He worked as a poet, songwriter and comedy sketch writer for Music hall performers before creating the Sax Rohmer persona and pursuing a career writing weird fiction. Like his contemporaries Algernon Blackwood and Arthur Machen, Rohmer claimed membership to one of the factions of the qabbalistic Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.[2] Rohmer also claimed ties to the Rosicrucians, but the validity of his claims has been questioned. He published his first book Pause! The Fu Manchu series[edit] Other work[edit] File:Sax Rohmer.png. Sax_Rohmer.png (Image PNG, 376x376 pixels)

Fu Manchu moustache

A Fu Manchu moustache is a full, straight moustache that grows downward past the lips and on either side of the chin; and often, the tapered, pointed ends of the moustache hang past the jawline.[1] The Fu Manchu is similar to the common horseshoe ("biker") moustache; the difference between the two types of moustache is that the Fu Manchu is grown only from the upper lip, whilst the sides remain clean shaven. The moustache came from China's Mongol invaders; they are seen with similar moustaches at the time of the Yellow Emperor, but prior to the Mongol invasion they were clean shaven.

The Fu Manchu moustache derives its name from Fu Manchu, the fictional character who wears such a moustache in film versions of the stories written by the British/Irish author Sax Rohmer. The literary Fu Manchu did not wear a moustache. The famous facial hair first appeared in the British serial The Mystery of Dr. See also[edit] Fu Manchu. File:Faceoffumanchu.jpg.
