A screengrab of Gawker's homepage, with a post claiming to link to a torrent of their source code. [UPDATE BELOW] Gawker Media's commenting database has been hacked and various Gawker sites are asking commenters to change passwords, adding, "We're deeply embarrassed by this breach. We should not be in the position of relying on the goodwill of the hackers who identified the weakness in our systems.

And, yes, the irony is not lost on us. " Below, screengrabs of the hack on Gawker, which has been removed from the site. Mediaite has more details on the hack: Earlier this year, Gawker attracted national media attention and launched an FBI investigation with a report on an iPad security breach which exposed the identities and personal information of 114,000 iPad 3G owners, including Mike Bloomberg, Harvey Weinstein, and Diane Sawyer. UPDATE: It seems that it's not just Gawker's commenting system that was violated, but Gawker's content management system, which editors use to publish every post. By Angella Johnson Updated: 09:11 GMT, 12 December 2010 Accused: Julian Assange is in a British jail, fighting extradition to Sweden WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s lawyer says he has seen secret police documents that prove the whistleblower is innocent of rape claims made against him by two women in Stockholm. Björn Hurtig, who is representing Mr Assange in Sweden, said the papers, which form part of the official Swedish investigation, reveal both women had ‘hidden agendas’ and lied about being coerced into having sex with Mr Assange, 39. The freedom of information crusader is being held in Wandsworth jail in London while fighting extradition to face the accusations, which his defenders say are part of a plot to stop him releasing more embarrassing information on his website about governments worldwide. Australian Mr Assange met both women at a seminar in Stockholm last August. ‘It was, I believe, more about jealousy and disappointment on their part. Time to ditch the blood-sucking social media gurus.

How social media changed protest. MasterCard, Visa shut down electronic donations to WikiLeaks | Raw Story. By Stephen C. WebsterTuesday, December 7, 2010 11:30 EDT EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: Mobile payments firm Xipwire, Inc. steps up to aid WikiLeaks The Philadelphia, PA-based mobile payments firm Xipwire, Inc. said Tuesday that it would act as an intermediary for WikiLeaks after the world’s largest credit card providers halted all electronic donations to the non-profit media outlet. “We do think people should be able to make their own decisions as to who they donate to,” Xipwire co-founder Sibyl Lindsay told Raw Story during a Tuesday afternoon telephone interview.

The company has set up a page where WikiLeaks supporters can donate, saying it will waive all related fees. “Our motivation is really simple,” Xipwire founder Sharif Aleandre explained in an email. Lindsay added that WikiLeaks supporters would be able to donate either via their website, or via text message if they have a Xipwire account.

An earlier report follows… Greenwald: ‘What’s really going on here is a war over control of the Internet’ ”A new WikiLeaks” revolts against Assange - DN.se. The pressure on WikiLeaks is increasing. DN.se reveals that several key figures behind the website that publishes anonymous submissions and leaks of sensitive governmental, corporate, organizational or religious documents have resigned in protest against the controversial leader Julian Assange only to launch a new service for the so-called whistleblowers. The goal: to leak sensitive information to the public. The new project, “Openleaks,” has been under way for some time and will be launched Monday. DN.se has spoken to individuals behind the new site and the message is clear.

“Our long term goal is to build a strong, transparent platform to support whistleblowers--both in terms of technology and politics--while at the same time encouraging others to start similar projects,” says a colleague wishing to remain anonymous. The news comes in turbulent times for WikiLeaks. Thousands of documents infuriating global leaders and policy-makers have been unveiled to the public via Cablegate.

Praetorian Prefect | Anonymous Turns Operation Payback Toward “The Jester” Prefect | Dec 10, 2010 | 42 comments The Jester, a hacktivist who is normally known for short term denial of service attacks against Jihadist web forums and who recently claimed responsibility for an outage at Wikileaks in the middle of Cablegate (Wikileaks publication of U.S. diplomatic cables) has himself become the target of the large scale hacktivist protest called Operation Payback. The Jester, or th3j35t3r as he’s known on Twitter, has ostensibly had the identity of either himself or an associate/fan revealed as a Montana man who works for the state government named Robin Jackson, who is becoming the target of what could be a good deal of unpleasantness from Anonymous and the 4chan/b/ board at large.

Why? Earlier today messages like these started to appear on the primary IRC channel being used by OperationPayback: 03[15:38] * Topic is ‘ Let´s find the guys that are trying to stop us. There appear to be two primary reasons Anonymous has turned their attention on this man. Overall Plan. Anonops History. One account. All of Google. 11 December '10, 05:48am Follow Jeff Jarvis has been working on a Cyberspace Bill of Rights for a few months and tonight he’s released a new, updated version that is cut down to 7 principles: I. We have the right to connect. II. We have the right to speak freely. III. I’ve been wondering about online rights (and privileges) lately, especially point IV … when do we need to keep things secret?

There is a lot of complexity in speaking freely. Maybe the larger question is, do we need this or is this discussion just metaphysical arm-waving? Sure, the Internet is still a wild west, and “rules” aren’t generally looked on favorably, but functioning societies need rules. Are we in an era where considering building a “second Internet” isn’t so far fetched? It’s Friday night, a good night for discussion, however … so what do you think of these 7 principles?

Naomi Wolf: Espionage Act: How the Government Can Engage in Serious Aggression Against the People of the United States. This week, Senators Joe Lieberman and Dianne Feinstein engaged in acts of serious aggression against their own constituents, and the American people in general. They both invoked the 1917 Espionage Act and urged its use in going after Julian Assange. For good measure, Lieberman extended his invocation of the Espionage Act to include a call to use it to investigate the New York Times, which published WikiLeaks' diplomatic cables. Reports yesterday suggest that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder may seek to invoke the Espionage Act against Assange. These two Senators, and the rest of the Congressional and White House leadership who are coming forward in support of this appalling development, are cynically counting on Americans' ignorance of their own history -- an ignorance that is stoked and manipulated by those who wish to strip rights and freedoms from the American people.

I call on all American citizens to rise up and insist on repeal of the Espionage Act immediately. 1. Lieberman Introduces Anti-WikiLeaks Legislation | Threat Level. Senator Joseph Lieberman and other lawmakers on Thursday introduced legislation that would make it a federal crime for anyone to publish the name of a U.S. intelligence source, in a direct swipe at the secret-spilling website WikiLeaks. “The recent dissemination by Wikileaks of thousands of State Department cables and other documents is just the latest example of how our national security interests, the interests of our allies, and the safety of government employees and countless other individuals are jeopardized by the illegal release of classified and sensitive information,” said Lieberman in a written statement.

“This legislation will help hold people criminally accountable who endanger these sources of information that are vital to protecting our national security interests,” he continued. Leaking such information in the first place is already a crime, so the measure is aimed squarely at publishers. The SHIELD Act is co-sponsored by senators John Ensign (R-NV) and Scott Brown (R-MA). I mean, there are ten monitors, three people manning it and it looks like it cost twice as much as your first car. The command centers we’re seeing sprout up from companies like Dell and Gatorade (they released theirs back in June) signal some interesting stuff.

Not so much because of what they’re aggregating, but because it shows brands recognizing a need to not only be watching social mentions, but to have a system in place to deal with them. You need to find your legs, too. As 2011 approaches, you should not only be monitoring what’s being said about you, but you should really be listening so that you can disseminate it down the pipeline. You want to see what my social media command center looks like? It may not be as sexy as Dell or Gatorade’s, but it’s a great DIY solution for most businesses. The most delicious aspect of the WikiLeaks cables is overhearing Mommy and Daddy gossip about the neighbors: Qaddafi's a nut, Prince Andrew a boor, Sarkozy a megalomaniac, and so on.

Of course, we already knew all that -- and the fact that we did has given rise to the dismissive reception of the documents in some parts of the commentariat. In the New Yorker, Hendrik Hertzberg writes that because the cables offer "no grand revelations of epic lying, deceit, or criminality," the chief lesson we draw from them is that "the private face of American foreign policy looks pretty much like its public face.

" That may be broadly true, but the "public face" of U.S. diplomacy does not include the following, from Sept. 6, 2009: "President Saleh pledged unfettered access to Yemen's national territory for U.S. counterterrorism operations. A teenager was arrested yesterday on suspicion of being involved with the Anonymous' Operation Payback. The operation orchestrated DDoS attacks on anti-piracy targets in the last months, and more recently against those who obstructed Wikileaks' work. Sources have informed TorrentFreak that the arrestee is one of the IRC-operators of Anonymous, known under the nickname Jeroenz0r. Starting mid-September, dozens of anti-piracy groups, copyright lawyers and pro-copyright outfits have been targeted by a group of Anonymous Internet ‘vigilantes’ under the flag of Operation Payback.

The operation started initially as ‘payback’ against outfits that tried to stop the BitTorrent site The Pirate Bay, and DDoS attacks were organized to strike back. A few days ago, the operation changed course and instead began to go after organizations that displayed opposition towards Wikileaks. Yesterday, this was followed by the arrest (Dutch) of an alleged ‘member’ of Operation Payback in The Netherlands. Culture Hack Day 2011 - Arts - Developers- Eventbrite. Invalid quantity.
