Scanning electron micrograph of E. coli bacteria. A rapidly growing colony can be programmed to act as a hugely powerful parallel computer. Photograph: Getty Computers are evolving – literally. While the tech world argues netbooks vs notebooks, synthetic biologists are leaving traditional computers behind altogether.

A team of US scientists have engineered bacteria that could solve complex mathematical problems faster than anything made from silicon. The research, published today in the Journal of Biological Engineering, proves that bacteria can be used to solve a puzzle known as the Hamiltonian Path Problem. This simple problem is surprisingly difficult to solve. Programming such a computer is no easy task, however. The experiment worked, and the scientists checked the yellow bacteria's answer by examining their DNA sequence. This is not the only problem bacteria can solve. The Generation M Manifesto - Umair Haque - HarvardBusiness.org. By Umair Haque | 8:01 AM July 8, 2009 Dear Old People Who Run the World, My generation would like to break up with you. Everyday, I see a widening gap in how you and we understand the world — and what we want from it. I think we have irreconcilable differences. You wanted big, fat, lazy “business.” You turned politics into a dirty word. You wanted financial fundamentalism. You wanted shareholder value — built by tough-guy CEOs.

You wanted an invisible hand — it became a digital hand. You wanted growth — faster. You didn’t care which communities were capsized, or which lives were sunk. You wanted to biggie size life: McMansions, Hummers, and McFood. You wanted exurbs, sprawl, and gated anti-communities. You wanted more money, credit and leverage — to consume ravenously. You sacrificed the meaningful for the material: you sold out the very things that made us great for trivial gewgaws, trinkets, and gadgets.

There’s a tectonic shift rocking the social, political, and economic landscape. The Foreign Ministry’s department for the explanation of Israeli policy* is running the project, and it will be an integral part of it.

The project is described in the government budget for 2009 as the “Internet fighting team” – a name that was given to it in order to distinguish it from the existing policy-explanation team, among other reasons, so that it can receive a separate budget. I’m a big fan of trying out various drinks and food when I’m out and about, particularly when abroad.
