Small biotech experts offer cautious approach to CRO use

Bonne Adams, VP of clinical operations at Tracon Pharma, which is a company with only ten employees, offered a lot of scepticism around CROs to attendees at BIO 2014 in San Diego on Wednesday. Tracon abandoned outsourcing in favour of in-house clinical development after trying the former apporoch a couple of years said Adams, who explained that by doing so the firm was able to cut cost 20% to 30% which was a big deal for a small company. Adams noted that not only did Tracon save money but it also improved the quality of its clinical work and eliminated the “policing” of CROs, which she said can be burdensome. The Importance and Future of Antimicrobial Surveillance Studies

Robert Masterton, Ayrshire and Arran National Health Service Board, The Ayr Hospital, Dalmellington Rd., Ayr KA6 6DX (robert.masterton@aaaht.scot.nhs.uk). Abstract Surveillance studies provide important information that allows for the identification of trends in pathogen incidence and antimicrobial resistance, including identification of emerging pathogens at national and global levels. Information obtained from antimicrobial surveillance studies is important for establishing trends in pathogen antimicrobial resistance and for identifying emerging pathogens at the national and global levels. Data from national and global surveillance studies indicate that the incidence of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens is increasing [1–3].
