Small biotech experts offer cautious approach to CRO use. The idea of two men and a compound transforming into a company that makes a profit may seem like a pipedream without outsourcing, but experts from small biotech cautioned that companies should be weary of CROs during any stage of their development.
Bonne Adams, VP of clinical operations at Tracon Pharma, which is a company with only ten employees, offered a lot of scepticism around CROs to attendees at BIO 2014 in San Diego on Wednesday. Tracon abandoned outsourcing in favour of in-house clinical development after trying the former apporoch a couple of years said Adams, who explained that by doing so the firm was able to cut cost 20% to 30% which was a big deal for a small company.
Adams noted that not only did Tracon save money but it also improved the quality of its clinical work and eliminated the “policing” of CROs, which she said can be burdensome. CRO turnover. What is a CRO, and why would you want to work for one? : London Blog. The second of four posts on alternative careers, based on presentations at the Source Event 2008 A simplistic view of lab-based careers might split the options into academic research or work in the industrial sector. Either route, but particularly the latter, can encompass a broad spectrum of roles and goals. Working in industry need not mean that you’re part of a big pharma company like Glaxo or Pfizer, as Elizabeth Allen explained at this year’s Source Event. Allen designs Phase I clinical trials for a living.
So what is a CRO? A CRO is an independent organisation that steps into the development process once a pharma company has identified a promising new molecule. Allen bigged up the UK as a leader of clinical research, stating that around a quarter of the world’s top 100 medicines were developed in this country. What’s it like? Allen described her role as highly rewarding, playing a key part in improving the lives of thousands of people. How do I get in? The Importance and Future of Antimicrobial Surveillance Studies. Abstract Surveillance studies provide important information that allows for the identification of trends in pathogen incidence and antimicrobial resistance, including identification of emerging pathogens at national and global levels. Routine surveillance is critical for creating and refining approaches to controlling antimicrobial resistance and for guiding clinician decisions regarding appropriate treatment.
Information obtained from antimicrobial surveillance studies is important for establishing trends in pathogen antimicrobial resistance and for identifying emerging pathogens at the national and global levels. Data from national and global surveillance studies indicate that the incidence of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens is increasing [1–3]. Figure 1 Figure 2. JMI Laboratories.
