Antique and Vintage Cross Pens

Cross has the distinction of being the first and longest-operating American writing-utensil manufacturer. The company says it has been in business “Since 1846,” but that’s a slight exaggeration since that was the year Alonzo Townsend Cross, the man for whom the company is named, was born. His father, Richard Cross, actually founded the company around 1847, though it was not until 1857 that Cross moved to Rhode Island, where the company continues to produce pens today. The first Cross goods were pencil cases and pens made of gold and silver, as well as other non-writing goods such as cigar holders. By the early 1870s, once Alonzo was fully part of the company, Cross took off. Alonzo Cross was credited with 25 patents in his life, including nine for stylographic pens and six for pencils. His most important invention, however, was the stylographic pen (similar to an ink pencil), which changed the face of fountain pens forever.

I don't believe there is any such thing as a 23K gold-filled pen. (But conceivably there is; it isn't ordinary, though.) Gold-plated, yes, because gold plating can be exceedingly thin. Nor do I have any sense that Cross has manufactured merely gold-plated pens; the gold-colored Cross pens I know about (which may not be the entire universe of Cross pens) are gold-filled or solid gold. At present I own a Century II presumably made in China and marked 1/20 10K, either rolled gold or gold-filled, those being synonymous terms and my eyes being temporarily foggy. I would find it odd that Cross USA made a pen with an all-gold appearance without labeling the gold content, assuming that it was rolled gold or solid gold.

So, yes, I'd say that among pens made in the USA there are more possibilities for Pensupply2000 than 10K rolled gold. History Of Cross Pens. My Cross Biz. A.T. Cross Image Library. Nibs on Cross Townsend. The recent post about someone returning a pen for a refund after six months to FPH due to a so-called "replacement" nib--(even though the nib was most probably original) prompts me to make these comments.

I belive it was very wrong to return the pen. Naturally it speaks well of FPH that they took it back-they had no reason to other than customer satisfaction. But this policy results in higher FPH prices--which are fully justified considering their service....Those of you who have my book should re-read the last page on ETHICS.I strongly belive ethics is a two way street. While I and the vast majority of sellers have excellent ethics, any pen seller has come across buyers who have little or no ethics.

Understand I am NOT talking about the FPH case here--although it is IMHO boderline. How AT Cross rewrote its future. All the President's Pens. Vintage Cross Pens 1870s-1930s. 11007: A.
