Welcome to TouchMath, Multisensory Teaching, Learning Math Tools Make Math Fun! Sue Patrick's Workbox System - Lapbook Lessons. Working the Workboxes. The basis of the system is to have 12 workboxes for each student. Each box (or drawer, envelope, however you choose to organize) holds one activity that the child is to do that day. These boxes are stored on shelves or on a shoe rack. Since each box is numbered, the child knows what needs to be completed and in which order. For more detailed information, see Sue's book.

Many homeschoolers have tweeked this set-up using other containers as workboxes (see A Peek Into the School Room for examples). -- Repurposed Cereal Boxes -- Sterlite plastic drawer carts -- Hanging file folders -- Magazine holders -- Wall Pockets -- Notebooks Besides seeing the workboxes, each child has a schedule strip. The schedule strip reinforces the workbox order, and also allows the teacher to place additional schedule cards for activities that won't fit in the boxes on the strip (ie. take a 15min. break, jump-rope for 10min.) Fenced in Family » Workboxes Become Work Pockets for Small Spaces. If you’re a homeschooler, you may have heard of Sue Patrick’s Workboxes – the phrase seems to be all over the place lately. If you’re not a homeschooler, you may not get much out of this post but feel free to read on anyway.

After hearing glowing things about Sue Patrick’s Workboxes over the last month, I decided to take advantage of hearing her speak at a session during the North Carolina Home Educator’s Conference that we went to over Memorial Day Weekend. I won’t go into a lot of detail, but I wasn’t at all pleased with what I heard. She presented the system as very rigid and, in my opinion, stifling to the child. (I’ve since found out that she first designed the workbox system for her autistic son, and children with autism apparently thrive on rigid structure.)

When I came home and was still hearing people rave about workboxes, I had to ask, “What is so great about Sue Patrick’s workboxes?” As you can see, I made two posters – one for Nick and one for James. . © 2009, Cindy.
