Animal Web Cams at the National Zoo. The National Zoo is home to 1,800 individual animals of 300 different species. Our best known residents are our giant pandas, but great apes, big cats, Asian elephants, birds, amphibians, reptiles, aquatic animals, small mammals, and many others can be found at the Zoo. You can take a virtual visit to the Zoo any day of the week by tuning into our live web cams, which feature many of the Zoo's animals. Watching elephants at the Zoo on the elephant cam: Our herd of elephants consists of six females and one male. Watch as they roam the elephant community center. (Note: the elephant cam is stationary, and the elephants can choose to move to areas that are off camera.) Watching lions: The Zoo is home to male and female lions. Dressed down in a red tank top, denim vest and jeans, with her long blond hair pulled back, and armed with—of all things—a chainsaw, Cherie Currie screamed nothing short of badass as her bazooka-sized guns ripped into a block of wood at the last SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. As festival onlookers watched in amazement, with her chainsaw roaring and wood shavings clinging to her skin, 50-year-old Currie didn’t let up for a second, proving she has just as much (if not more) stamina now as a professional chainsaw artist than in her global rock star days as lead singer of the all-girl group The Runaways.
For Currie, her story begins growing up in the San Fernando Valley of Encino, Calif., in the kind of neighborhood where “you didn’t have to lock your doors.” “My mom was a workaholic, my dad was an alcoholic,” she explains of her parents, who divorced when she was 14. “It was the only decision for me,” Currie says of joining the band. “I wanted to be onstage; it happened very fast.
