This is the 14th temple in Utah. The temple is located at 250 South Main Street, directly across the street from the historic tabernacle in Brigham City, Utah. A public open house was held August 18 - September 15, 2012. The temple was announced on 3 October, 2009. The 36,000 square-foot temple sits on a 3.1 acre parcel of land known as Central Square where Central Elementary School stood for decades. The temple serves more than 40,000 Church members living in 13 stakes in northern Utah and the Malad, Idaho area.

Latter-day Saint temples are aesthetically beautiful buildings with meticulous landscaping. Temples differ from the tens of thousands of local meetinghouses throughout the world where members typically meet for Sunday worship services and midweek social activities — and where visitors are always welcome. Initially, the church constructed temples in areas where there were large concentrations of members: Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Hawai'i (all in the USA), and Alberta (Canada). In the mid 20th century, because of the importance of temples in the theology, the church tried to balance density with the travel requirements attending the temple imposed upon members.

Thus, temples were built in Europe (namely, Switzerland dedicated in 1955 and England dedicated in 1958); the Pacific Islands (namely, New Zealand dedicated in 1958); and Washington, D.C.
