Whatever your taste in sunnies, it’s likely there’s a style to suit you with a huge variety of vintage shades on the market. Sunglasses first became popular in the late 1920s, and took off in the 1930s with Hollywood stars such as Joan Crawford and Cary Grant frequently wearing round sunglasses on camera. The world’s leading sunglasses brand, Ray-Ban was founded in 1937, just before Aviator sunglasses became popular as a result of military pilots wearing them during World War II. The 1950s saw wraparound sunglasses (popularised by jazz musicians) and novelty plastic frames, which are now highly collectable. Meanwhile in the 1960s, the trend was for ‘Space-Age’ sun goggles, or the wire-framed ‘granny glasses’ worn by John Lennon. Classic styles can fetch anywhere between £5 and £200-400.
