Part of preparing is acquiring adequate supplies to survive an emergency, but an equally important part is making the most of the supplies you already have.

Every day we throw away valuable supplies that could be critical in an emergency; the key is knowing what to keep and what to throw away. Otherwise, you go from being prepared to being a hoarder. That’s both inefficient and unhygienic. Below, I’ve compiled a list of everyday items with multiple uses that most people throw away: Broken crayons, candle stubs, and any other form of paraffin wax can be used to make new candles, or along with other items to make fire starting tablets.

Is there anything you save that I don’t have on the list? Tags: bacon grease , candles , crayons , dryer lint , egg cartons , hair clippings , medicine bottles , paraffin wax , soap , soda bottles. Storing Food in a Hot Environment. Let’s face it; enough food to stock a Walmart warehouse is of no use to you if it loses its nutritional value before you have the chance to eat it. This happens more frequently than you might think, for a variety of reasons, but it’s easy to avoid, which means that not only can you save money while building an adequate reserve of food more quickly, but also that you’ll be more likely to have enough to feed your family (and possibly friends) in the event of an emergency. The first step is choosing the right type of food. I’m not trying to be a lunch Nazi like Michelle Obama and tell you to eat your vegetables; I’m talking about the packaging method—although a properly balanced diet is still a good idea. People often model their decisions on what our military does, which leads them to stockpile cases of MREs as their primary emergency food source.

Next up is canned goods. For example, you’d be surprised just how much space you can find in your home if you really try, such as: 45 Survival/SHTF Tips! Preppers. Editor’s Note: In the following article Tess provides a list of key pantry staples for extended emergencies. While it’s generally pretty easy to go out and purchase MRE’s and freeze dried foods in bulk, what poses a challenge to many is understanding how to properly stock a pantry.

Why would one need to stock a pantry when ready-to-eat meals can be easily bought? One of my favorite phrases that I tell new preppers is that “your preps are your lifeline.” A few other points to consider when starting an emergency food pantry are: 1. Make Your Own Survival Bars. This article was originally posted at Adventures in Self Reliance Apparently there are a couple of different recipes out there for these, we just used one I had been given by a food storage lady.

Now, this was really a fun experiment, because there were 6 of us making these survival bread loaves, and of course they turned out 6 different ways. We’ll discuss what happened as we go through the directions. Ingredients: 2 cups oats 2 1/2 cups powdered milk 1 cup sugar 3 TB honey 1 3 oz package jello (orange or lemon) 3 TB water Mix the oats, powdered milk, and sugar together in a bowl: A couple of us used regular oats, a couple used quick oats. In a medium pan mix water, jello and honey. Raspberry jello at a rolling boil: Add jello mixture to dry ingredients. Add the water a little at a time–do NOT get impatient and just add a bunch of water! Shape dough into a loaf about the size of a brick.Yeah, right. Cool. So there you have it. This information has been made available by Ready Nutrition Google+ How To Make Homemade Smoke Grenades. To start we will want to make the “shell’ for our smoke-grenade. We do this by making a cylinder from one of our playing cards.

Firmly tape this together. After that is done cut the other card in half and make a bottom for your cylinder by folding and taping. Next you want to securely wrap the cardboard cylinder with tape so none of your mix will ooze out while it dries. Alternatively, you can use toilet paper tubes wrapped with aluminum foil or duct tape for the smoke bomb shells. Now it is time to make the smoke-mix. Nomorerack.com. How to Make an Off-Grid Washing Machine. If we are ever forced to live through an extended grid-down situation, I think many of us would realize how much we rely/depend upon our “common” appliances like our washing machines. For that reason, having an off-grid secondary option will really make living a whole lot easier if things do go south. With that in mind, I wanted to share with you how you can make your own effective off-grid “washing machine” using easy-to-obtain items: What You’ll Need Two 5-gallon buckets with one lidToilet plunger (make sure it’s a newly purchased one)Liquid detergent (optional: stain stick)VinegarRope or clotheslineClothes pins How to Make an Off-Grid Clothes Washing Kit Step 1: Drill a hole in the middle of the lid just big enough for the plunger handle to fit through.

If there's a "nuclear event," and you're down-wind, you need to take KIO3 or KI before the radioactive plume reaches you.

In radiological "events," huge amounts of radioactive iodine can be released into the atmosphere. They know about that in Chernobyl. Radioactive Iodine (131-I) released in such events can be absorbed by the thyroid. KIO3 essentially fills the thyroid with "good iodine," which blocks radioactive iodine - the very worst form of iodine - and keeps it from entering the thyroid gland. Potassium Iodate blocks radioactive iodine from entering the thyroid gland. That's why the government gives thyroid blocking potassium-iodine tabs - free - to people who live near nuclear power plants. And that's why some call KIO3 anti-nuke pills, or anti-radiation pills. If you don't have KIO3 or KI at the time of the event, then it's probably too late. 90 Tablets - 85 Milligrams. 300' U.S. Made Military 550 Paracord (Rothco) 1000' U.S. Made Military 550 Paracord.

When disaster strikes, there’s a pretty good chance your local grocery stores are going to be stripped bare in a matter of hours. From panicked people trying to stock up on last minute supplies, to those who failed to prepare for even short-term disasters and now find themselves facing the prospect of starving, your local grocery store is going to look like a battleground in a post-apocalyptic movie. Most grocery stores have a maximum 3 day supply of goods on hand before they run dry. That means even short-term disasters like hurricanes, floods and earthquakes can cause supply chain problems that will quickly wipe out their inventory. Now throw in a long-term disaster that cuts of supplies for months, and you have a real recipe for disaster.

To be prepared to face an emergency situation where food supplies are blocked, you need to invest in a long-term food supply. If we are ever faced with a TEOTWAWKI type situation, given that most people are far from prepared with hygienic items like deodorant — let alone food — the world is going to literally become a stinky place (you ever been in a packed bus in a third-world country? Not fun I tell ya, not fun).

Well, by storing a few extra items as part of your preps you’ll become the go-to guy (or gal) for those looking to manage their underarm issues. Heck, I’m sure you’ll even get some sweet barter deals out of it, “Hey man, how bout we trade my ammo for your homemade deodorant? My wife won’t let me back in the house unless I fix this problem”. How to Make Homemade Deodorant What you’ll need 6-8 Tbsp Coconut Oil (solid state)1/4 Cup Baking Soda1/4 Cup Corn Starch Step-By-Step: Making your Homemade Deodorant Putting Your Homemade Deodorant to Use Since coconut oil begins to melt above 75°F, if you live in a warmer climate (or it’s Summer), it’s best to store it in a cooler area (like your fridge).

Resources. Building the Ultimate Survival Kit. Every time a disaster strikes, you see pictures of people walking down the road. Usually they are thirsty and hungry. Often they are cold, wet, injured, and sick. Before a disaster struck close to home, every one of these people thought that disasters were something that happened to other people in other places. When the scope of a disaster is huge, most of the doctors, nurses, firemen, and policemen are either injured themselves, busy caring for family members, or evacuated from the area, and those civil servants that remain will be seriously overworked and under-supplied.

We will start out with more basic items that every family should have on hand, followed by several highly recommended optional items, ending with a few additional items that will be extremely helpful in the event of a long term catastrophe or collapse-type scenario. 72-Hour “Grab-and-Run” Survival Kits Rule of Threes Consider placing all of the following items in your 72-hour survival kit: Compact First Aid Kit SteriPen. 37 Things You Should Stock but Probably Aren’t. Guest Post: SHTF Survival: First Response Packs for Medical Emergencies. When there is a medical emergency, time is of the essence.

Typically, medical rescue workers who respond to accidents work swiftly by having their supplies organized and at times, pre-assembled (wound care, trauma packs) to treat patients more efficiently. Having these items pre-packaged cuts down on response time, and gives the responders more of an advantage in properly caring for the wounded. That efficiency can easily be replicated for your medical supplies or added to your SHTF sick room.

Medical first response packs can be made ahead of time using most of the medical products that you have on hand. In fact, these first response packs are not limited to medical emergencies, they can also be used for dental emergencies as well. To prepare for a SHTF scenario, it would be beneficial to take into account the most likely medical situations you may come in contact with and plan accordingly.
