A War Crimes Tribunal in the Malaysian capital has begun its hearing against George W. Bush and Tony Blair, charging the former officials for the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, Press TV reports. The tribunal will determine whether the former US president and British prime minister committed war crimes and violated international law during the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq. The Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal is an initiative by Malaysia's former Premier Mahathir Mohamad, who staunchly opposes US-led military adventures in various troubled regions.

Hyperactive neurons build brains in synaesthesia - health - 17 November 2011 - New Scientist

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn21183-hyperactive-neurons-build-brains-in-synaesthesia.html Neurons with hyperactive tendencies may help to explain the mysterious mechanisms that cause synaesthesia. The discovery could help develop treatments for other visual anomalies such as hallucinations. Grapheme-colour synaesthesia is a condition in which an individual's sense of numbers or letters is associated with different colours.

More data shows neutrinos still faster than light - physics-math - 18 November 2011 - New Scientist

Read more: " Neutrinos: Complete guide to the ghostly particle " One of the most staggering results in physics – that neutrinos may go faster than light – has not gone away with two further weeks of observations. The researchers behind the jaw-dropping finding are now confident enough in the result that they are submitting it to a peer-reviewed journal. "The measurement seems robust," says Luca Stanco of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics in Padua, Italy. "We have received many criticisms, and most of them have been washed out."
Scientists at Chalmers have succeeded in creating light from vacuum – observing an effect first predicted over 40 years ago. The results have been published in the journal Nature . In an innovative experiment, the scientists have managed to capture some of the photons that are constantly appearing and disappearing in the vacuum. The experiment is based on one of the most counterintuitive, yet, one of the most important principles in quantum mechanics: that vacuum is by no means empty nothingness.

http://www.plusultratech.com/ Few people would debate that our educational system is flawed. Look in any newspaper, magazine, or blog that has an education section and you will find way too many articles which try to point out the problems and suggest how to fix them. According to these articles the problems range from anything and everything from poor teaching, to poor parenting, to not enough time in the classroom, to too much time in the classroom, to too much homework, to not enough homework, to poor curricula, etc. etc. etc. We are not here to debate any of this; only to give another perspective.

http://news.sciencemag.org/scienceinsider/2011/11/faster-than-light-neutrinos-opera.html?rss=1 New high-precision tests carried out by the OPERA collaboration in Italy broadly confirm its claim, made in September, to have detected neutrinos travelling at faster than the speed of light. The collaboration today submitted its results to a journal, but some members continue to insist that further checks are needed before the result can be considered sound. OPERA (Oscillation Project with Emulsion-Tracking Apparatus) measures the properties of neutrinos that are sent through the Earth from the CERN particle physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, and arrive in its detector located under the Gran Sasso mountain in central Italy.

Scientists create light from vacuum

In the Chalmers scientists’ experiments, virtual photons bounce off a “mirror” that vibrates at a speed that is almost as high as the speed of light. The round mirror in the picture is a symbol, and under that is the quantum electronic component (referred to as a SQUID), which acts as a mirror. This makes real photons appear (in pairs) in vacuum. Mysterious Structures In Chinese Desert Captured By Satellite Explained…Most Probably (video) | Singularity Hub

There’s nothing like satellite pictures of strange structures in the Chinese countryside to spark an online conspiracy debate. News sites all over the web are posting the mysterious pictures and receiving a flood of comment theories on what exactly the structures are. Speculations range from the facetious yet obvious alien crop circles to the more thoughtful atmospheric research stations and bulls eyes for satellite weaponry.

The World's most difficult chemical experiment: The struggle to discover the secret of super-heavy elements

ScienceDaily (Nov. 17, 2011) — In order to find the chemical properties of super-heavy elements, chemists must conduct one of the world's most demanding chemical experiments in a matter of seconds. When scientists discover new elements, that is just the beginning of a voyage of discovery in the world of chemistry. Chemists are not just interested in knowing the number of protons and neutrons in the new, super-heavy elements. They also want to discover their physical and chemical properties, such as their boiling and melting points, whether the element is soluble in water or acid and how the element binds and reacts with other atoms and molecules. Of course, it is not possible to directly measure the boiling point of super-heavy elements, but the chemists can get an indirect answer by measuring the volatility; i.e. how strongly the element binds to a metal surface.
November 09, 2011 is going to be an unforgettable auspicious day according to the Hindu mythology. In a recent planetary research observation, it has come to notice that Jupiter will be making its closest approach to Earth this Wednesday night at around 8.30 pm today. Jupiter (Brihaspati- in Vedic astrology), is now larger and brighter than at any other time between 1999 and 2023. 'Jupiter' reaches its highest point in the sky to show a steady pic on favorable night. According to the sources, the Moon moves slowly by brilliant "Star" with a steady glow, that star is none other than king of the planets named 'Jupiter'.
