Amazon.com Server Said to Have Been Used in Sony Attack. Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN)’s Web Services cloud- computing unit was used by hackers in last month’s attack against Sony Corp. (6758)’s online entertainment systems, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. Hackers using an alias signed up to rent a server through Amazon’s EC2 service and launched the attack from there, said the person, who requested anonymity because the information is confidential.

The account has been shut down, the person said. The development sheds light on how hackers used the so- called cloud to carry out the second-biggest online theft of personal information to date. The incursion, which compromised the personal accounts of more than 100 million Sony customers, was “a very carefully planned, very professional, highly sophisticated criminal cyber attack,” Sony has said. Drew Herdener, a spokesman for Seattle-based Amazon, declined to comment. The hackers didn’t break into the Amazon servers, the person said. Rented Servers Tracing Activity Security Risk.

Security of virtualization, cloud computing divides IT and security pros. Network World - Is moving to virtualization and cloud computing making network security easier or harder? When some 2,100 top IT and security managers in 27 countries were asked, the response revealed a profound lack of consensus, showing how divided attitudes are within the enterprise.

The "2010 State of Enterprise Security Survey - Global Data" report shows that about one-third believe virtualization and cloud computing make security "harder," while one-third said it was "more or less the same," and the remainder said it was "easier. " The telephone survey was done by Applied Research last month on behalf of Symantec, and it covered 120 questions about technology use -- organizations remain overwhelmingly Microsoft Windows-based -- and cyberattacks on organizations.

Contending with virtualization hangover The survey showed that the median annual budget for enterprise security in 2010 is $600,000, an 11% increase over 2009, with yet another 11% increase anticipated in 2011. Best security questions to ask about SaaS. Security issues have to be clearly examined before diving into software as a service (SaaS), warns Burton Group analyst Eric Maiwald, who shed some light on the subject at this week's Infosec conference in Orlando. SaaS, offered via a cloud computing platform, can offer cost savings and speed in platform deployment in many instances, compared to a business trying to acquire and install software internally.

Businesses eager to race into the cloud typically say "they can measure the cost savings the first couple of years," said Maiwald. "But I think they're leaving something out. " What's often missing is inclusion of the costs to conduct a suitable level of verification on the vendor, including security and legal reviews, data-center site visits and other practices necessary to ensure compliance obligations are met. - Is their data center in a location prone to hurricanes or earthquakes? Are security issues delaying adoption of cloud computing? This is one in a collection of seven pieces on Burning Security Questions. Read the rest here. "Yes, security is one of the concerns about cloud computing that is delaying its adoption," says Eric Mandel, CEO of managed hosting services provider BlackMesh in Herndon, Va. "One of the biggest security concerns about cloud computing is that when you move your information into the cloud, you lose control of it. The cloud gives you access to the data, but you have no way of ensuring no one else has access to the data. Security concerns will continue to keep some companies out of the cloud, Mandel acknowledges. Symplified, a start-up providing a cloud-based security service that extends enterprise access-management controls to cloud computing, agrees there's a strong sense of heightened risk. "We find the focus is on the credentials. Future Generation Computer Systems : Addressing cloud computing security issues. Abstract The recent emergence of cloud computing has drastically altered everyone’s perception of infrastructure architectures, software delivery and development models.

Projecting as an evolutionary step, following the transition from mainframe computers to client/server deployment models, cloud computing encompasses elements from grid computing, utility computing and autonomic computing, into an innovative deployment architecture. This rapid transition towards the clouds, has fuelled concerns on a critical issue for the success of information systems, communication and information security.

From a security perspective, a number of unchartered risks and challenges have been introduced from this relocation to the clouds, deteriorating much of the effectiveness of traditional protection mechanisms. By Charlie McNerney, GM, Business & Risk Management, Global Foundation Services When we talk with business customers about what they expect from cloud computing, two main themes emerge. On the one hand, technology business decision makers are enticed by the idea that purchasing services from a cloud environment could allow them to save money and focus on their core business, especially in the current economic climate.

At the same time, certain themes have emerged as potential barriers to rapid adoption of cloud services. At the top the list are concerns about security, privacy, reliability, and operational control. The white paper we’re releasing today describes how our coordinated and strategic application of people, processes, technologies, and experience with consumer and enterprise security has resulted in continuous improvements to the security practices and policies of the Microsoft cloud infrastructure. Cloud computing security forecast: Clear skies | Security. To critics, cloud computing can't be trusted because you aren't in control of the data outside your network. But if that's the case, then how secure are the data and collocation centers that corporations contract with to host their data?

"It does come down to vetting the practices of the provider and making sure they meet the standards you want for your business," Phil Hochmuth, a senior analyst at Yankee Group, said Monday, the eve of Cloud Computing Innovation Day in Santa Clara, Calif. Companies like Salesforce.com, Amazon.com, and Google have built businesses around serving up on-demand services to enterprises that would rather pay a service provider than buy hardware and hire staff to manage their databases. However, handing over the data is still a cause for concern among many corporations. "What are they doing to the data? Is it persistently encrypted? How secure is the data? Securing the data is key to a cloud service provider's business, Selipsky said. Says Cloud Computing Will Be As Influential As E-business. STAMFORD, Conn., June 26, 2008 View All Press Releases Special Report Examines the Realities and Risks of Cloud Computing Cloud computing heralds an evolution of business that is no less influential than e-business, according to Gartner Inc.

Gartner maintains that the very confusion and contradiction that surrounds the term "cloud computing" signifies its potential to change the status quo in the IT market. Gartner defines cloud computing as a style of computing where massively scalable IT-related capabilities are provided “as a service” using Internet technologies to multiple external customers. “During the past 15 years, a continuing trend toward IT industrialization has grown in popularity as IT services delivered via hardware, software and people are becoming repeatable and usable by a wide range of customers and service providers,” said Daryl Plummer, managing vice president and Gartner Fellow.

Mr. The types of IT services that can be provided through a cloud are wide-reaching.
