The 32 traditional counties of Ireland. The traditional county of Dublin is now subdivided into 4 administrative counties. The counties of Ireland (Irish: contaetha na hÉireann; Ulster-Scots: coonties o Airlann) are sub-national divisions that have been, and in some cases continue to be, used to geographically demarcate areas of local government. These land divisions were formed following the Norman invasion of Ireland in imitation of the counties then in use as units of local government in the Kingdom of England.[1] The older term "shire" was historically equivalent to "county".
The principal function of the county was to impose royal control in the areas of taxation, security and the administration of justice at the local level. Cambro-Norman control was initially limited to the southeastern parts of Ireland; a further four centuries elapsed before the entire island was shired. In Northern Ireland, counties are no longer used for local government; districts are instead used. ... Blue Flag Locations 2013. Irish language. Irish (Gaeilge) is a Goidelic language of the Indo-European languages family, originating in Ireland and historically spoken by the Irish people. Irish is spoken as a first language by a small minority of Irish people, and as a second language by a rather larger group. Irish enjoys constitutional status as the national and first official language of the Republic of Ireland, and is an officially recognised minority language in Northern Ireland.
It is also an official language of the European Union. The public body Foras na Gaeilge is responsible for the promotion of the language throughout the island of Ireland. Irish was the predominant language of the Irish people for most of their recorded history, and they brought it with them to other countries, notably Scotland and the Isle of Man, where it gave rise to Scottish Gaelic and Manx.[5][6][7] It has the oldest vernacular literature in Western Europe.[8] Names[edit] listen ). Part-time Garda Reserve to be trebled to 2,000 in new push.
The part-time unpaid Garda Reserve is set to undergo a major expansion. And the Government wants to encourage those seeking a career in the force proper to first serve a stint as a reservist. Under Government plans being unveiled on Thursday, 300 reservists are to be recruited this year as the first step in increasing it to 2,000 members by 2021. The scale of the proposed expansion is unprecedented in the 10-year history of the Reserve force. At one time it numbered 1,200, but has reduced in size to just under 700 at present as publicity around the concept has waned over time.
Members of the Reserve patrol in communities with full-time gardaí, and aid the policing of major events. It is envisaged that the expanded Reserve would have a greater role in serving summonses and the issuing of fixed-charge penalty notices. Tánaiste and Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald said the Reserves would play “a supportive role undertaking local patrols and crime-reduction measures”. Advantage Community.
