Gurteen Knowledge Letter: Issue 219 - September 2018 Contents Introduction to the September 2018 Knowledge Letter For the second year running, I have a special Knowledge Café coming up soon to celebrate World Values Day in October. It is a free online, virtual Knowledge Café run on the Zoom video conferencing platform.

The theme of this year's Café introduced by Charles Fowler will be to do with how we put our values into action in the community. Do we do this successfully? Levels of trust in Western countries appear to have been in a worrying decline for many years as evidenced by the much-followed annual Edelman Trust Barometer. This World Values Café will explore these and other issues relating to values in the community .

See here for more information and to register. The Café is looking to be truly global - so far I have 62 people from 28 countries registered! We are what we think about all day long A man is what he thinks about all day long. This is one of my favourite quotes. Unsubscribe. Issue 218 - August 2018. Gurteen Knowledge Letter: Issue 217 - July 2018 Contents Introduction to the July 2018 Knowledge Letter A couple of month's ago I talked about the Gurteen Knowledge Community Group on Linked and how the forum received a large number of posts which were simply promoting blog posts and my strategy for blocking the majority of them.

Well, the good news, such posts have dropped off dramatically. But I don't think it is still not a real forum. There are not the discussions and interaction that I would like to see. If you have questions to ask on KM, thoughts or ideas that you would like to discuss got allong to forum. Community: The Structure of Belonging by Peter Block (2nd Edition) One of the books that has influenced me the most over the last few years is Community: The Structure of Belonging by Peter Block. Gurteen Knowledge Letter: Issue 216 - June 2018 Contents Introduction to the June 2018 Knowledge Letter I gave a talk on “Conversational leadership and the Power of Conversation” and ran a Knowledge Café masterclass at the European Commission's Knowledge Week In Brussels a few weeks ago. I was a tad nervous about my talk as it was a brand new one based on the opening chapter of the blook I am writing on Conversational Leadership and it was not as polished as I would have liked it to be.

I had 60 minutes but I only took 30 minutes to present and turned 30 minutes over to conversation and Q&A - a format that I call a conversational talk and one that so few other speakers have adopted. Despite my reservations, the talk went well - people really engaged with the topic. There is a short video interview that was shot after my talk on YouTube. Gurteen Knowledge Letter: Issue 215 - May 2018 Contents Introduction to the May 2018 Knowledge Letter A question you may like to reflect on this month :-) What kind of conversation do you like?

Here a few thoughts to get you thinking: Oh, the comfort - the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person - having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are, chaff and grain together; certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then with the breath of kindness blow the rest away.

The kind of conversation I like is one where I don't feel the need to censor anything I say! The kind of conversation I like is one in which you are prepared to emerge a slightly different person Knowledge Management Matters: Creativity and Innovation The book is free and you can download it from here. Gurteen Knowledge Letter: Issue 214 - April 2018 Contents Introduction to the April 2018 Knowledge Letter The Gurteen Knowledge Community Group on LinkedIn is now up to 5,700 members and is still one of the more active of all the KM LinkedIn groups. Take a look if you are not a member and join up if you like it. But note, each week I receive a large number of posts to the forum which are simply pointers to blog posts. If I let them all through the forum is no longer a discussion forum but a promotional vehicle for blogs (like so many others).

I let the occasional promotional post through (often the first one or two before I switch on moderation for that user). A suggestion though, if you wish to post an article to the forum then do it in the form of a question to people in order to stimulate a conversation. The Future of Management Is Teal A big thanks to Silvia Bombard for telling me abut the work of Frederic Laloux. One passage jumped out at me: Help support my work I love quotations.

Issue 213 - March 2018. Gurteen Knowledge Letter: Issue 213 - March 2018 Contents Introduction to the March 2018 Knowledge Letter As I hope most of you are aware my interest is in the role of conversation in our lives. Conversation at all levels: personal, family, social, community, organizational and societal. A major part of my work is in encouraging people to "talk more" (and more importantly to "listen more"). The Knowledge Café is at the heart of this. If you would like to learn more about the Café then take a look at my Knowledge Café website - knowledge.cafe. If you are interested in running a Café of your own take a look at the Getting Started page in my blook on Conversational Leadership. The Café is not just about learning from each other - it can be put to a wide range of purposes. If you need any help - just get in touch.

Issue 212 - February 2018. Gurteen Knowledge Letter: Issue 212 - February 2018 Contents Introduction to the February 2018 Knowledge Letter I am travelling much less these days. Since getting married again five years ago and slowing down just a little with age, I have less inclination to roam the world. I also have my blook to write. But hopefully this year, I will make a few trips, Brussels, Singapore, Kuwait and Dubai may be on the cards but the only definite trip right now is to Lisbon, Portugal on 16/18th May for Ana Neves' Social Now 2018 conference.

You will find details of the agenda as well as the masterclasses online. The great thing about the conference though, apart from its unique format and the other speakers is that it is on a Thurs/Fri giving the weekend to explore Lisbon. I hope to see a few of you there. Issue 211 - January 2018. Gurteen Knowledge Letter: Issue 211 - January 2018 Contents Introduction to the January 2018 Knowledge Letter Linkedin reminded me recently that it was 25 years since I founded Gurteen Knowledge and started to work for myself. I didn't know whether to be pleased or horrified! I posted the event on Facebook and Linkedin and have had many well wishes for another 25 years.

I am 70 later this year, so that would make me 95. We need more dialogue and a little less debate One of the many posts I have in mind for my blook is to compare debate with dialogue. We often say we need to debate something - especially in the political world - when what we really need is a dialogue. Dialogue is collaborative: two or more sides work together toward a common understanding while debate is oppositional: two sides oppose each other and attempt to prove each other wrong.

To resolve issues and make decisions, we need both debate and dialogue. I am sorry I don't know enough to have an opinion on that David GURTEEN. Issue 210 - December 2017. Gurteen Knowledge Letter: Issue 210 - December 2017 Contents Introduction to the December 2017 Knowledge Letter The December issue of my newsletter is always the shortest one of the year. Getting your head around the Cynefin Framework Some years ago, when I first started to learn about Dave Snowden's Cynefin Framework, it took me a little while to wrap my head around it as there were never any good examples given of the different types of problems associated with each domain. If you have the same problem, take a look at this excellent article The Cynefin framework: applying an understanding of complexity to medicine. In our increasingly complex world, I think everyone should have a grasp of the Cynefin framework. PS. What is the difference between responsibility and accountability? Gurteen Knowledge Letter: Issue 209 - November 2017 Contents Introduction to the November 2017 Knowledge Letter It is not very often I get an award but I was delighted earlier this month to be one of the winners of this year's CILIP Walford Award for information professionals who have made an outstanding contribution to knowledge and information services. Thank you CILIP (The Library & Information Association). Is Sophia, the robot harmless? I hope you have not missed all the fuss about a robot called Sophia that was granted Saudi Arabian citizenship recently and all the media razzmatazz around it.

A bit of harmless fun you might think or is it harmless? Harmless enough, if you understand that Sophia, although a fantastic bit of technology is not that smart. But if you don't understand this, Sophia is misleading you (and even scaring you) into believing that general artificial intelligence is far more advanced than it is. Gurteen Knowledge Letter: Issue 208 - October 2017 Contents Introduction to the October 2017 Knowledge Letter If you haven't discovered him already, take a look at the work of Prof. Jordan Peterson. This man is brilliant - just watch a few of his video talks. I have written about him before and his thoughts on freedom of speech.

There are not many people who excite me with the originality of their thinking and their passion - Jordan is one of them - though he gets a tad too intense at times. These are just a little of his thoughts on changing the world - watch the video to learn more. The proper strategy for implementing social change is to stay within your domain of competence and that requires humility which is a virtue which is never promoted in modern culture. An interview with Ana Neves about my work Ana Neves of KMOL recently interviewed me by email about my work with Conversational Leadership and the Knowledge Café.

Zoom World Values Day Knowledge Café Upcoming Henley Forum Events. Issue 207 - September 2017. Gurteen Knowledge Letter: Issue 207 - September 2017 Contents Introduction to the September 2017 Knowledge Letter Last year I ran a face-to-face Knowledge Café in London to help celebrate World Values Day organized by Charles Fowler but this year we are going to experiment with something a little different - a virtual Knowledge Café hosted on the Zoom video conferencing platform. I already have almost 100 people registered from 25 different countries and have places for a few more. Zoom will support over 100 participants and allowing for a few no-shows, I plan to cap registration at 120.

I normally limit my face-to-face Cafés to less than 30 but I plan to modify the format a little for Zoom to handle a larger number. The Café is on Tuesday 10th October - do sign up if you haven't already. Take a look here for more information. Peter Block on small group working How do I get every voice in the room?
