Not everyone is willing to do something about fear, exploitation, abuse or even nuisance, but Special Constables aren’t everyone. They’re the public who stepped up, Specials are the best of us, yet they’re also the tile layers, train drivers, and teachers we encounter every day.

They’re ordinary but exceptional, their passion is to serve, and my privilege is to do it with them.” Special Constables are volunteer Police Officers. Colleagues came to the officer’s aid but a second man, Justin Jackson, then appeared from the crowd carrying a large watering can full of petrol and poured it over them. Justin Jackson was later jailed for three years and nine months for the attack. PC Zhak Burrows says the incident will live with him forever. Fall in Essex special constable numbers over a decade | Braintree and Witham Times. THE number of volunteer special constables in Essex has fallen over the past decade, figures reveal. Increases in workloads have made it impossible for some of the officers in England and Wales to volunteer alongside their day jobs, claims the Police Federation.

The Association of Special Constabulary Officers has described a significant fall in numbers across the two nations as a "huge loss" to policing. Home Office data shows Essex Police had 527 special constables in March this year – up from 521 the year before. However, it represents a 15 per cent drop compared to 2011, when there were 617. The officers, also known as "specials", hold the same powers as police constables and work a minimum of 16 hours a month as volunteers. A fall in the number of specials within Essex Police over the decade came alongside a five per cent decrease in full-time police officers, despite a Government-backed recruitment campaign for 20,000 more officers nationally by 2023. Of those, 29 were in Essex Police. BBC - COVID-19: Tributes paid after Essex Special Constable dies. Essex Police remembers colleagues who died in line of duty | Echo.
