This initiative is modeled on existing national young academies such as De Jonge Akademie in the Netherlands and supported by the InterAcademy Panel for International Issues (IAP). Global Young Academy will help establish new national young academies and provide a forum for young scientists in countries without such an organization. GYA members ideally are around the age of 35 and are nominated by senior scientists in their own nations as likely future leaders. Membership will be for 4 years.

Though augmented reality (AR) as a technology has existed for roughly two decades, it has only just begun to break into the mainstream by way of immersive desktop and mobile experiences. Much of what has been seen so far has been either in the entertainment, marketing and location-based sectors, but one area that is sure to benefit from AR is education. One of the most obvious ways AR will impact education is by enhancing learning materials for students, and a new demo from a Bangkok-based organization shows just that. Perhaps providing a glimpse into the near future of learning, the video ( embedded below ) from Thailand's Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST) shows how augmented reality could help students open a whole new dimension from their textbooks. In this example, a student flips through a geology book meant to teach her about the layers of the earth.

Galaxy Zoo

Galaxy Zoo: Hubble uses gorgeous imagery of hundreds of thousands of galaxies drawn from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope archive. To understand how these galaxies, and our own, formed we need your help to classify them according to their shapes — a task at which your brain is better than even the most advanced computer. If you're quick, you may even be the first person in history to see each of the galaxies you're asked to classify. More than 250,000 people have taken part in Galaxy Zoo so far, producing a wealth of valuable data and sending telescopes on Earth and in space chasing after their discoveries.

The Geometry Playground team recruited three independent artists for residencies at the Exploratorium. Each artist collaborated with us to develop an exhibit for Geometry Playground. Stacy Speyer created 15 metal polyhedra—3D shapes with many faces—that invite visitors to appreciate their symmetry and relationships. Geometry Playground is made possible by the National Science Foundation and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation . Any opinions, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation.
