Downsizing to a shed may seem like a drastic step to take in a resource and financially-strained climate, but U.K-based FKDA Architects is hoping you'll do just that.

Would You Live in a Shed?

According to FKDA, the prefab shed idea came as a response to increasing reports "of people being forced from their homes unable to make their current mortgage payments, and turning to live with family, in garden sheds and even cars. " FDKA's micro-home, built from FSC-certified wood and insulated with cellulosic fiber derived from recycled newspapers, is hardly a garden shed. The so-called shed comes with a skylight, radiant underfloor heating, energy-efficient appliances, ample storage space, LED lighting, and optional solar photovoltaic and hot water heating systems. From the looks of it, FDKA's shed is just as nice as a standard studio apartment--if not nicer. The shed comes in two options--the 24-square-meter big shed ($57,554-$82,220) and the 13-square-meter little shed ($32,888-$57,554). [Via Inhabitat] Would You Live in a Shipping Container?

Adam Kalkin isn't the only architect to make homes out of shipping containers.

Would You Live in a Shipping Container?

A handful of architects, including Jennifer Siegal and Lot-Ek, began using them ten years ago as a gritty reaction against the tidy white surfaces of modernism. But nobody has employed shipping containers more inventively than Kalkin, a New Jersey architect and artist who has used them to design luxurious homes, museum additions, and refugee housing. In architectural circles, Kalkin is regarded as something of an oddball. He began his talk at the Urban Center in New York Tuesday night by playing the first five minutes of a Jerry Lewis movie, followed by the actor's acceptance speech at the Academy Awards last month. His website includes lessons on hitting a tennis forehand and a selection of songs to sing after taking antidepressants.

For all his artsy provocations, Kalkin's strategy makes some practical sense. "Quik Build" arrives as modernist prefab has begun to lose its bargain appeal after years of hype. Old Garage turned Mini Dream Home! Hello there!

Old Garage turned Mini Dream Home!

It’s been a busy week with a trip to Seattle for the Picasso exhibition and a drive out to the coast but I knew I had to share this amazing remodel with you before the week came to a close. Everyone loves good makeovers and the ones involving tiny spaces, creative design and ingenious solutions are my all time favorites! Check out how Seattle artist, designer and welder, Michelle de la Vega, created this beautiful little 250 sq. ft. haven… The before… This lonely little detached garage is just begging for some love. The after! A cozy, light filled sleeping loft is so perfect for the space.

The kitchen is well organized and accessible with open storage solutions. The rustic wood burning stove becomes sculptural in this room along with Michelle’s own art installations. The glass boxes housing pillow forms are actually a tribute to Michelle’s father. You know I am a big fan of great bathroom design and this one delivers. How many of us have garages that only house our junk!?
