On distingue fondamentalement deux types de gaufrage : le gaufrage en relief et le gaufrage en creux. Le gaufrage en relief consiste à créer le motif décoratif en surélevant des parties du papier par rapport à la surface avoisinante. Le gaufrage en creux forme le motif en créant des dépressions dans la surface du papier.
