Play (theatre) Symbol of theatre Comedies are plays which are designed to be humorous.

Play (theatre)

Comedies are often filled with witty remarks, unusual characters, and strange circumstances. Certain comedies are geared toward different age groups. Comedies were one of the two original play types of Ancient Greece, along with tragedies. An example of a comedy would be William Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer Night's Dream," or for a more modern example the skits from "Saturday Night Live".[2][3] A generally nonsensical genre of play, farces are often overacted and often involve slapstick humour.

A satire play takes a comic look at current events people while at the same time attempting to make a political or social statement, for example pointing out corruption. These plays contain darker themes such as death and disaster. Director's cut. A director's cut is a specially edited version of a film, and less often TV series, music video, commercials, comic book or video games, that is supposed to represent the director's own approved edit. 'Cut' explicitly refers to the process of film editing: the director's cut is preceded by the rough editor's cut and followed by the final cut meant for the public film release.

Director's cut

Director's cuts of film are not generally released to the public: with most film studios the director does not have a final cut privilege. The studio (whose investment is at risk) can insist on changes that they think will make the film profit more at the box office. Direct-to-video. Direct to video (also known as direct to DVD, direct to VHS, direct to digital, made for video, straight to video, shot on video, or straight to DVD) refers to the release of a film to the public immediately on home video formats rather than a theatrical release or television broadcast.[1] Because sufficiently inferior sequels, prequels, or midquels of larger-budget films may be released direct to video, references to direct-to-video releases are often pejorative.

Direct-to-video

Despite this, direct-to-video releases have become something of a lifeline for independent filmmakers and smaller companies.[2] Reasons for releasing direct to video[edit] A production studio may decide not to generally release a TV show or film for several possible reasons: poor quality, lack of support from a TV network, negative reviews, controversial nature, or a simple lack of general public interest. The family film segment is a major part of direct-to-video sales. According to the LA Times, Physical format releases[edit] Film treatment. A film treatment (or treatment) is a piece of prose, typically the step between scene cards (index cards) and the first draft of a screenplay for a motion picture, television program, or radio play.

Film treatment

It is generally longer and more detailed than an outline (or one-page synopsis), and it may include details of directorial style that an outline omits. Treatments read like a short story, except they are told in the present tense and describe events as they happen.[1] Original draft treatment[edit] More elaborate forms of the draft treatment are the step outline and the scriptment. Today's video games are based in complex worlds and they tell stories. No longer does a player simply advance through repetitive screens slaying goblins and ghouls in a quest toward the goal. How to write a video game script. Showrunner. Showrunner is a term originating in the United States television industry referring to the person who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of a television series—although such persons are credited as executive producers.[1] The showrunner is at the opposite end of the staff hierarchy from runners, who are the most junior members of the production team, though sometimes showrunners are called runners for short.

Showrunner

The term is also occasionally applied to people in the television industries of other countries. The duties of a showrunner often combine those traditionally assigned to the writer, executive producer and script editor. Unlike films, where directors are in creative control of a production, in episodic television, the showrunner outranks the director.[2] History[edit] Traditionally, the executive producer of a television program was the chief executive, responsible for the show's production. Los Angeles Times columnnist Scott Collins describes show runners as:[4] 1 Choice for Media Pre-Production. Fourth wall. Speaking directly to or otherwise acknowledging the audience through a camera in a film or television program, or through this imaginary wall in a play, is referred to as "breaking the fourth wall" and is considered a technique of metafiction, as it penetrates the boundaries normally set up by works of fiction.[1][4] This can also occur in literature and video games when a character acknowledges the reader or player.

Fourth wall

The fourth wall should not be confused with the aside or the soliloquy, dramatic devices often used by playwrights where the character on stage is delivering an inner monologue, giving the audience insight into their thoughts. Convention of modern theatre[edit] Outside theatre[edit] The metaphor of the fourth wall has been used by the actor Sir Ian McKellen with regard to the work of the painter L. S. Profession[edit] Screenwriting is a freelance profession. No education is required to become a professional screenwriter, just good storytelling abilities and imagination. Screenwriters are not hired employees, they are contracted freelancers. Screenwriting in the film industry[edit] Every screenplay and teleplay begins with a thought or idea, and screenwriters use those ideas to write scripts, with the intention of selling them and having them produced.[2] The majority of the time, a film project gets initiated by a screenwriter and because they initiated the project, the writing assignment exclusively becomes his or hers.[2] These are referred to as "exclusive" assignments or "pitched" assignments.
