Beginning in the Fall of 2002, an assignment was given for entry level teacher education students to read an overview of copyright law and the exclusion to that law that is known as “fair use” ( and reflect on how those laws will effect them as future teachers. There had been a feeling that all students who had reached the level of junior or senior in college would surely know about copyright laws and fair use of copyrighted materials. However, the results were startling to faculty. With the exception of those students with Secondary Education Majors in media production, no students were aware of the fair use exclusion to copyright laws available to educators and students. This should not be a debatable issue; however, I have found this to be true in many of the educational settings I have worked in as well as studied in. Now as faculty in a teacher education program, I am again surprised at the lack of awareness of copyright laws by students entering my program and also at the lack of compliance shown within educational settings they have emerged from.
