Mostly, it’s a record of my own becoming as a person — intellectually, creatively, spiritually — and an inquiry into how to live and what it means to lead a good life. Founded in 2006 as a weekly email that went out to seven friends and eventually brought online, the site was included in the Library of Congress permanent web archive in 2012.

Here’s a little bit about my seven most important learnings from the journey so far. Please enjoy. Donating = Loving Bringing you (ad-free) Brain Pickings takes hundreds of hours each month. Piled Higher and Deeper. Rethinking Aid to Palestine - By Nadia Hijab. Foreign aid to Palestine is desperately in need of rethinking. Wittingly or not, external aid facilitates Israel's occupation, enables an inept Palestinian leadership to survive, and subverts much of Palestinian civil society. The extent of the dependency on aid means the Palestinian Authority (PA) must spend considerable energy begging for handouts from Arab governments, the European Union, and the United States.

Facing a severe cash shortage -- which is not unusual -- the PA was recently unable to pay the salaries on which an estimated one million bureaucrats and their families rely. One of the major problems with external aid was illustrated by the beatings a month ago of young, peaceful Palestinian protesters by PA security forces. Israeli forces had destroyed Palestinian security forces in 2002 at the height of the second Intifada. Aid has also had a very negative impact on Palestinian civil society. Clearly, an urgent review of aid policies in the OPT is long overdue.

SLR Camera Advice Centre. Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras offer you great creative control over your picture taking. SLRs allow you to use interchangeable lenses, control over aperture and shutter speeds, as well as giving you the opportunity to be creative with flash and filters. You also have the choice between manual focus and autofocus cameras. Although the modern camera can happily control a number of the key settings relating to the exposure and flash levels, these can normally be overridden.

The continued development of the SLR has lead to far greater ease of use of the camera. With the automation of many of the controls this type of camera can now provide a great deal of assistance when you take a picture, whilst still affording you overall control. Although still the domain of the serious amateur photographer the camera now has great appeal to any photographer who is attracted to the ideas of interchangeable lenses and a degree of control over aperture control and shutter speed control. Scandals of Classic Hollywood: Marlene Dietrich, Femme Fatale.

Marlene Dietrich was glamorous in a way we can’t quite understand. Like Greta Garbo, the woman to whom she is so often compared, Dietrich was otherworldly, her face a mask across which emotion flitted and fought. Her every move seemed an exercise in control, a sort of beautifully molded artifice. But Dietrich was no confection: she was a masterpiece. Her formidable sexual appeal stemmed from a stunning androgyny, and an ability to simultaneously embody the passive and the dominating, the masculine and the feminine, the demure and the suggestive.

While other Hollywood stars worked to make themselves seem “Just Like Us,” Dietrich was never like us. Her slinking accent, the alabaster face, the unerringly svelte wardrobe — all of it communicated as much. But that exquisiteness has long been attributed to the work of her so-called “creator,” director Josef von Sternberg, a man of exacting tastes and tremendous talent who directed her in the eight films that have come to define her legacy.
