Picking a Color Palette for Your Game’s Artwork

An Introduction to Color Palettes The term color palette is used widely across many different industries of design. Its exact definition and interpretation varies slightly between industries, but for the purposes of game design we can simply refer to it as a predefined set of colors based on specific rules. Traditional color palettes generally consist of five colors within a specific scheme, but this is more of a guideline than a rule. In game design, color palettes can consist of any number of colors as long as they all follow your predefined set of rules. Before we delve deeper, consider whether you want to create your own color palette or find a ready-made scheme online.

Color is often overlooked by beginning DPs, and it is an extremely powerful tool. I described color in cinematography as “the use of analogous or complimentary color tones to create contrasts between elements in the frame and communicate emotional ideas to the audience.” Not a great description, but good enough for starters. Color can be used to communicate information to audiences in all kinds of ways. For example, the storyline in Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic takes place in three different places, each of which is a very different color. Color can also communicate emotional information. HD Dog (Wolf) Textures. Here you will find a handful of HD dog skins for the Minecraft wolf. Each will have a display screenshot, and then (in Spoilers) the Wild, Tame and Angry skin for that wolf. To use it, simply save the skin in your texture pack of choice (or mobs folder of your minecraft.jar) as wolf.png, wolf_tame.png and wolf_angry.png. If you use Randommobs, append a number to the end of each--so wolf2.png, wolf_tame2.png and so forth. To tell them apart, the tame wolves have collars; the angry show their teeth.

If you'd like to use it in your own texture packs, you may do so as long as you credit me. (The exception is packs that will be made available for remix--I'd prefer that there be only one degree of separation between me & my hard work.) Enjoy!
