I intend to share my unique opportunity to explore design from my position as an Occupational Therapist as well as how my approach to my work with children with disabilities has shifted through my exposure to design methods. The main goal of the Co-design project is to explore the use of creative design research methods (drawing, photography, building, modeling, collage) with children to inform the design of a play space in the therapy department at Sunny Hill. The study involves collaboration with children with disabilities, their parents, caregivers and healthcare providers at the centre.

Photovoice as Participatory Action Research Tool for Engaging People With Intellectual Disabilities in Research and Program Development

http://cnr.sagepub.com/content/11/3/242.abstract The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the everyday issues, challenges, struggles, and needs of elderly, community-dwelling women in the first weeks posthospital discharge. Fourteen elderly women were interviewed in their homes 6 to 8 weeks following hospitalization. In addition, using a process based on photo novella or photovoice, 4 of the women took photographs of their everyday lives. The photos were used as triggers during the interviews.

Exploring occupation and its meaning among homeless men

http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/cot/bjot/2009/00000072/00000003/art00006 Few studies have been conducted that address homelessness from the perspective of those who have experienced it. Studies tend to focus on services for homeless people, with little description of occupational engagement and the experiences of the homeless people themselves. This qualitative study, conducted within a phenomenological tradition, explored the lived experiences of adult men living in an inner-city shelter.
