Ender's Game - Ender Saga 1 (Book) by Orson Scott Card (2002. Thirteen Reasons Why (Book) by Jay Asher (2009. This is Jay Asher’s first book, and it has been a smash hit amongst teenagers. It was recommended to me by another bookseller, and I finished it in a single day. The premise of the story is fairly simple. Hannah Baker has killed herself, but before she died she recorded tapes explaining her reasons to the people she holds responsible. She sends them to the first with instructions to pass them on to the next person. The tapes have reached Clay Jensen when we start to hear the story. I was gripped until the final page and could not stop thinking about the tragedy and poignancy of poor Hannah’s story for the rest of the day. The Hit (Book) by Melvin Burgess (2013.
I came at this as a long-time Burgess fan, Bloodtide is probably my favourite teen book of all, and this does not disappoint. After 20 years of recession, no hope of good employment and barely existent welfare, is a week of joy worth a lifetime of misery? This book almost, almost became the book I've been looking for, a teen fiction book that encourages kids to vote, but it got a little distracted along the way. There is an awful lot going on in this book! Burgess writes about drugs very candidly, he understands and isn't afraid to say why kids want to take them. He isn't afraid to say anything! Always he is pushing at what is acceptable in teen fiction, using the language of real teens without compromise.
One of the best things about this book are the comments on selfishness, he lulls the reader into thinking that taking The Hit is great, giving you one week as a king. This is good stuff for a thought provoking read. The 5th Wave - The 5th Wave (Book) by Rick Yancey (2013. It's an audacious claim to say that a book is probably the best teen book ever written and I don't say it lightly. But first I feel I should expand on that comment further by saying that not only is it (probably) the best teen book ever written (and I've read a LOT of teen fiction!) , but it is possibly one of best books of the decade in any age category. For those of you who have read "The Passage" this is up there with that, in terms of the quality of the writing, character development, plot, intrigue and the overall "feel" of the story. "Hunger Games" fans may be upset at what I'm about to say, and for this I make no apology - "The 5th Wave" makes "The Hunger Games" look like a mere warm up act and trust me, once you've read this book you'll either agree (because, you know, it's true) or you'll pretend you disagree (because you don't want it to be true).
Also unlike “The Hunger Games” and more akin to “The Passage” is the narrative in “The Fifth Wave”. Refugee Boy (Book) by Benjamin Zephaniah (2001. Escape from Camp 14: One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West (Book) by Blaine Harden (2013. 'This is a story unlike any other' - Barbara Demick, author of Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea.
Now a major documentary film. Twenty-seven years ago, Shin Dong-hyuk was born inside Camp 14, one of five sprawling political prisons in the mountains of North Korea. Located about fifty-five miles north of Pyongyang, the labor camp is a 'complete control district,' a no-exit prison where the only sentence is life. No one born in Camp 14 or in any North Korean political prison camp has escaped. No one except Shin. A gripping, terrifying biography with a searing sense of place, Escape from Camp 14 by journalist Blaine Harden will unlock, through Shin, a dark and secret nation, taking readers to a place they have never before been allowed to go. There was no reviews around here, and I buy all my manga through Amazon. For years. Let me get right to the point: this story is brutal and cruel. You think this was yaoi? This is korean, and it was a bit of a shock to me at first. The art is right there to justify the plot. Don't be afraid to buy a good book like this. Wither - The Chemical Garden 1 (Book) by Lauren DeStefano (2012. I was drawn to Wither by the interesting cover and the fact that it was a new dystopia title and this is a genre I really enjoy. The book starts off with an interesting and unusual premise, set in a world where scientists have found a cure for all illness' the human race appeared safe from any diseases.
The first generation took the cure and have been living long lives, unfortunately the cure caused mutations to their children and the future generation's lives have been cut short. Women now die at 20 and men at 25 and the human race is facing extinction. Our heroine Rhine is a young woman who is stolen to become the wife of Linden a wealthy man who lost his first wife and needs new wives to provide him offspring to keep his family line alive. His father arranges for him to pick three wives Rhine, Jenna and Cecily and the wives sole purpose is to provide comfort, entertainment and children to Linden.
Eager to escape and return to her remaining family Rhine plots her escape. The God Delusion (Book) by Richard Dawkins (2007. Many have said of this book that 'Bestsellers come & Bestsellers go' & that as Time passes, religions will recover their former prominence. There is even a book called 'God is Back', proudly proclaiming the end of this books long shadow. It is true that Time does indeed fade things & books like 'Why I am Not a Christian' by Bertrand Russell become less bracing as culture changes. However not all things fade and (3 years on) this book still makes for addictive reading. Open any page, and you have to read the whole of it - it is still bracing, potent & resolutely true. The main thrust of the book doesn't look likely to fade quickly either unless (as Alister McGrath has suggested) evolution & science is turned upside-down by new evidence.
On top of this, debating with fellow reviewers & reading the 'fleas' has convinced me that the book is still potent enough to incite reviews from people who dare not read it! So, maybe this book will fade with time, who knows? Children of the Flames: Dr Josef Mengele and the Untold Story of the Children of Auschwitz: Amazon.co.uk: Lagnado, Dekel. The Perks of Being a Wallflower: Amazon.co.uk: Stephen Chbosky. Oh my god, I have fallen in love! I don't think I have read a book so beautiful in my life. Charlie is such a shy guy, and is so introverted. He is starting high school, he has no friends, and he is scared, so he writes letters to an anonymous person - "Dear Friend" - for someone to talk to, for someone to confide in, as he has heard this Friend "...listens and understands and doesn't try to sleep with people even if they could have. I need to know that these people exist.
" (p3) The story is told through the letters that charlie writes to Friend as he experiences his Sophomore year. The way Charlie views the world, his innocence, and the way he expresses what's normally kept internal, his thoughts and feelings - rather than it just being a narration, he's actually telling an anonymous someone - has captured my heart. The other characters in the book, especially Patrick and Sam, are great, but what's better is Charlie's relationship with them.

Without it, there would be no great art, no advances in science and technology, and no extreme sports.
Without it, we’d also be deprived of the many insights into human nature that we get out of witnessing other people do shockingly imprudent things and then try to rationalize them. Stuck Up! Relax. I am not asking you to like it. I just want you to listen. That right there is the emotional journey that David Levithan takes you on in Every You, Every Me. Every You, Every Me is a novel told with words and photographs. I have wanted to read a David Levithan book for a while now. Now it was a year later. This technique was an excellent way to help the reader understand Evan's state of mind, which, you may have guessed, is not exactly stable. The photographs were a wonderful touch to the story. (2008. The first thing that makes this book interesting is the format.. a series of emails (and the occasional text) between Russell T Davies, and Benjamin Cook, a journalist who writes many of the Doctor Who articles.
This communication continues over a year, whilst the scripts for series 4 are being written, and many aspects were hitting the news, such as David Tennant leaving to play Hamlet, and Steven Moffat taking over from Russell. The emails are pretty much unedited, and they give quite an interesting insight into Russell himself, and fans of his writing will enjoy references to his other shows, such as Queer As Folk, and Bob and Rose. It's also a book about writing and story telling - if you ever thought that script writing in particular is easy, prepare to think again!
