Let me preface this post, then, by disclaiming my expertise! I am by no means a chemist nor even a particularly well-schooled dyer. I have been dyeing by the seat of my pants for about 13 years, but I do end up liking most of what I dye. I am very loosey goosey, and if that technique will bother you, I suggest you click out of here before I bug you too much! Much of my dyeing knowledge comes from reading the Dharma Trading website and catalogue, the Prochem website and catalogue, and many blogs, in particular, Paula Burch’s site.

It's taken that long to get most of my photos from the trip edited, and to get my head wrapped around being back at work. Then last weekend we took off and spent a couple of days with a friend in Moab, always a welcome trip. And, I went to a second meeting with the art quilt group I've found in Utah county. I am really liking this group of women, they are energetic and creative. One of the members, Sue, has a blog and took some pictures at the meeting- they are posted here. Consider refreshing your yardage by dyeing your fabric for a fresh spin on any fabric, whether solid or printed. Dyeing fabric can be a great way to branch out as a quilter or sewist. Not only can you enjoy learning more about the process of how fabric is made, but fabric dyeing also allows you to customize your projects by using fabrics that incorporate textures that are completely unique to you. I've used this technique on two skirts and one of my Project Run & Play entries. I think it's the unknown result of dying the different laces that keeps me coming back. Now I just need to discover some more lace ;) First, the chocolate buttons: I looked for an enamel paint to paint my buttons, but found that Revlon Espresso 840 nailpolish was the perfect shade for chocolate.

It makes it easier to paint both the top and sides at the same time if you hold it stuck on a toothpick, blow on it a little bit before setting it down, preferably on a plastic surface, not paper towel. I love the bright colors and elements of surprise in tie-dying. This project will get you started on two basic tie-dye folds that are easy to do and have many variations that can keep you busy through lots of T-shirts. I have a casual approach to tie-dying - I like to be surprised by what the design turns out looking like. Others will practice a fold over and over until it turns out the same every time. You'll probably decide quickly which your preference is. Shibori Dyeing. Well, it's Week 2 (see here for Week 1) of my complex cloth project and I decided what to do with two of my fabrics for a second step.

Being so inspired by Itchiku Kubota's kimono work, I wanted to work shibori into at least some of my cloths. Two of them stood out as good candidates. The brightly colored orange/pink one because it was a little brighter than I wanted it to be and the blue one - both weren't really that interesting and could do with some spicing up before I started printing, stamping, sewing, etc. There are many shibori tying methods. For these two, I decided to do ne-maki, ori-nui, and arashi. Tweaking Ice Dyeing. Ice Dyed T-shirts. I've been intrigued by ice dyeing techniques for some time and finally got around to trying it.

I decided to try it on t-shirts - mostly because it's getting really hot here and I need some more thin tees! Materials:*t-shirts - I used Hanes Soft Comfort*powdered procion dyes*soda ash - I use the ph raising soda ash from a local pool store*ice*containers that are not used for food preparation*dust mask - wear it when measuring and pouring the soda ash and powdered dyes*rubber gloves 1. Dissolve 1/2 cup soda ash in a gallon of water (warm water works best).

Add your t-shirts - you can probably get 4 or 5 in this amount before having to double it. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Dyeing with Bleach. No fancy equipment, no dangerous chemicals. I cut many corners and don’t measure out anything exactly, and yet I’ve been able to consistently get really beautiful saturated colors that are colorfast. I begin with cotton sateen (from either Hancock Fabrics, the chain or Joann Fabrics; Egyptian cotton from Joann Fabrics, or silk charmeuse from Exotic Silks) and each is soaked in a tub of soda ash/water for a minimum of 10 minutes.
