From my own experience to the numerous stories of others I’ve heard from talking to them or reading on blogs, I know there are many women who go from one expert to another, trying to perfect the latch, increase supply, and eliminate pain. For some there is relief, but for many there is just endless frustration, culminating in disappointment and guilt. This is not what we want for new mothers! The lactation assistance business is booming — most hospitals and many pediatricians now employ some type of lactation consultant, and visits with them are standard practice for many new moms who want to breastfeed. Without a doubt, this is a positive step. However, when I talk to many moms, I worry that support is moving to much towards advice.
