Propaganda - Silk. How extreme isolation warps the mind. Sarah Shourd’s mind began to slip after about two months into her incarceration. She heard phantom footsteps and flashing lights, and spent most of her day crouched on all fours, listening through a gap in the door. That summer, the 32-year-old had been hiking with two friends in the mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan when they were arrested by Iranian troops after straying onto the border with Iran. Accused of spying, they were kept in solitary confinement in Evin prison in Tehran, each in their own tiny cell. She endured almost 10,000 hours with little human contact before she was freed. One of the most disturbing effects was the hallucinations. “In the periphery of my vision, I began to see flashing lights, only to jerk my head around to find that nothing was there,” she wrote in the New York Times in 2011. “At one point, I heard someone screaming, and it wasn’t until I felt the hands of one of the friendlier guards on my face, trying to revive me, that I realised the screams were my own.”

How the Starfish Prime Nuclear Bomb Worked – blowing up the radiation belts for science. By Marshall Brain | July 2, 2010 Imagine you are a scientist. In 1958 there is a big discovery – some of the very first satellites launched by the United States discover the Van Allen radiation belts. Over the next couple of years they are further studied and characterized by more satellites. So imagine that you are a scientist, and there are no nuclear proliferation or testing bans in place yet.
What’s the next thing you would do? Perhaps you would launch a nuclear bomb into space and try blowing up the belts, just to see what would happen. It was a “1.45 megaton weapon set to burst 400 kilometers high”: This far flung array was pointed solely toward seeking the answers to several objectives vital to the nation’s defense needs. For most people on the ground, however, the explosion was more like the ultimate fire works display, with a mystery: What would it look like?

Those who have read my other works know that I came from fundamentalist Christian background; a mindset that clearly set boundaries of what I should and should not believe. This book may touch on some of those ideas in conversation, but will not be the primary focus here, instead the focus is upon equipping you with a new sense of wonder and understanding of just how big this omniverse is and just how amazing a part of it you can be. Though you will find the definition to vary within the pages of this book, the term Gnosis in its most basic form simply means knowledge. Going more deeply Gnosis means intrinsic knowledge of a mystical nature; something that is personal and experiential.
It is my opinion that the best way to understand something is to take a hands on approach to its investigation, not taking other people’s word for it. This finding has enormous implications for philosophy and metaphysics. Instead of a closed universe that is winding down deterministically from an initial state of high information, we find the universe is open and increasing information indeterministically from an initial state of relatively high entropy and low information. Information is being continuously created in the universe, not least by human beings who are just learning that they are part of the cosmic creative process. An open indeterministic universe with increasing information suggests three testable philosophical ideas: a model for free will and creativity that may satisfy determinists and libertarians a value system based on providential processes in the universe an epistemological explanation of knowledge formation and communication. MDMA - Molly | Facts about Ecstasy. MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine), commonly referred to as ecstasy or molly, is a drug that is sold either as a pressed pill taken orally, or as a powder that is snorted or swallowed. MDMA’s effects resemble those of both stimulants and psychedelics.
A typical dose of 100 to 125 mg lasts four to six hours. People who use MDMA describe themselves as feeling open, accepting, unafraid and connected to people around them. Typically used in social settings, especially among the rave and dance club cultures, MDMA’s effects are stimulated by visuals, sounds, smells and touch. Sources M. R. Erowid.org, G. "The Man Who Runs The World's Smartest Website" (in The Observer) Since the mid-1960s John Brockman has been at the cutting edge of ideas.
He is a passionate advocate of both science and the arts, and his website Edge is a salon for the world's finest minds To say that John Brockman is a literary agent is like saying that David Hockney is a photographer. For while it's true that Hockney has indeed made astonishingly creative use of photography, and Brockman is indeed a successful literary agent who represents an enviable stable of high-profile scientists and communicators, in both cases the description rather understates the reality. More accurate ways of describing Brockman would be to say that he is a "cultural impresario" or, as his friend Stewart Brand puts it, an "intellectual enzyme". (Brand goes on helpfully to explain that an enzyme is "a biological catalyst – an adroit enabler of otherwise impossible things".) UERL | Urban Ecology Research Lab.

Jan 13 2017 Cognitive Biases in Health Care Decision Making This was an unexpected pleasant find in an unusual place. The Gerontological Society of America recently put out a free publication designed to educate patients about cognitive biases and heuristics and how they can adversely affect decision making about health care.
The publication is aimed at older health care consumers, but the information it contains is applicable to all people and situations. It is a well written excellent summary of common cognitive biases with a thorough list of references. What is most encouraging about this publication is the simple fact that it recognizes that this is an issue. The report is aimed simultaneously at health care providers and patients. When it comes to fighting terrorism, The Fletcher School's Jebsen Center for Counter-Terrorism Studies emphasizes predictive strategies over preemptive action. "Imagine tomorrow, a nuclear device goes off in Cincinnati, Ohio. " The frightening scenario is posed by Brig. Gen. Russell Howard (Ret.), whose Fletcher School office is full of papers and mementos from his 37 years of Army service. The question is one of the most challenging facing governments around the world today--how can you retaliate against an almost invisible opponent?
That center is The Fletcher School's Jebsen Center for Counter-Terrorism Studies, which Howard has directed since its inception in 2005. The Jebsen Center distinguishes itself by a philosophy that maintains counter-terrorism should be predictive, preventive and preemptive, with the latter being a last resort. "You can use soft power," he says. "It closed the loop on what you were doing, why you were doing it," says Howard. Page 1 | Page 2. WiseGEEK: clear answers for common questions. Xkcd: Time. Breaking the Speed of (Light) Thought | INTERFERENCE. An announcement a couple of weeks ago claimed that the speed of light had been broken. A pair of German physicists, Dr. Gunter Nimtz and Dr. Alfons Stahlhofen, of the University of Koblenz, claimed that they measured microwave photons – energetic packets of light – traveling “instantaneously” between a pair of prisms.
If true, this discovery clearly violates Einstein’s theory of special relativity while raising the possibility of supraluminal (faster than the speed of light) travel. Their experiments found that as they separated the two prisms by up to 3 feet and shot microwave photons through them, most of the photons reflected off the first prism they encountered while a few photons appeared to “tunnel” through space to reflect off the second prism. While the Internet has been all abuzz about this important discovery, this isn’t the first time a claim has been made that the 186,000 miles per second speed of light had been broken. The purpose of the event is to engage with the community in a casual, comfortable setting to talk about the exciting science of protein folding and the Foldit computer game. There will be a short presentation on the science behind Foldit, but the event is mostly dedicated to Q & A and open discussion with the audience. We're very excited about this opportunity to share Foldit in such a personable format! This is also a great chance for any Foldit players in the San Diego area to come together and talk to a member of the Foldit team. Can Marijuana Lift Colorado Out of the Recession? iStockphoto/Thinkstock Colorado raked in $5 million in tax revenue in 2011 from medical marijuana businesses, and its cities collected hundreds of thousands more from the budding industry. With Colorado voters poised to legalize marijuana for recreational use this November, their tax coffers could be facing an avalanche of new funds currently being lost to the black market. But tax revenues aren’t the only potential economic benefit hinging on legal weed. If voters pass Amendment 64, which would legalize marijuana and regulate it like alcohol, the state will save $12 million in criminal and court costs in the first year, according to a report by the Colorado Center on Law & Policy. It would also generate an estimated $24 million in excise tax revenue, all of which will go directly to the construction of new public schools.
The report doesn’t delve into all the additional jobs that would be created within the marijuana market itself. “Marijuana Capital of the Country” Pot and Productivity.
