Modes/Elements: Part 2 of 12 Even more fundamental than the signs of the zodiac, which were covered in Part 1 of this series, are the elements and modes. In fact, the elements and modes come together to create the signs, as you'll soon see. The elements – fire, Earth, air and water – are, simply put, the raw materials that make up the natural world. Stephen Arroyo wrote, "the four elements are not merely symbols or abstract concepts, but rather ... refer to the vital forces that make up the entire creation that can be perceived by the physical senses ... " (1) These forces are very deep and rich, and enliven human consciousness as well. It's essential, then, that you immerse yourself in the elements, both experientially and mentally, to build a strong astrological foundation. The four elements manifest in humans as core energy patterns and states of consciousness, certain ways of being.

And now for the modes. References 1. Synodic Astrology: Synodic Cycles & Planetary Retrogrades

There are many cycles occurring at the same time, all interweaving and nesting in one another. Synodic Astrology explores these planetary cycles, the themes of the cycles, and where we are in the progression of the cycles. A natal astrology chart (or any astrological chart) is a picture of one moment frozen in time. Planetary Synodic Cycles start when two planets align in their orbits, looking from the Sun (although we can look at cycles relative to other planets as well, and even relative to a location on Earth). The following illustration shows two successive synods between Earth and Venus, which creates one Earth-Venus synodic cycle, and which has a duration of 1.6 Earth years. See the Venus web page for more about Earth-Venus synods and their precessional pentagonal pattern. Note to astrologers: Earth-Venus. EcoAstrology.
