Although it seems as if the whole world is being hammered by icy winds and brutal snowstorms, it is winter only in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s summer, and in South America, there is plenty of warm weather, sun, sandy beaches perfect for snorkeling, surfing and sunbathing and lush, green forests and mountains for hiking and camping.

In the mild summer weather of Patagonia in the southern part of the continent, you can zip-line through forest canopies or jet-ski across crystalline, azure lakes. In the tropical rainforests of Colombia and Venezuela, you can trek through steamy jungles to catch a glimpse of colorful birds and exotic animals. Most of South America lies in the Southern Hemisphere, but even in the Northern Hemisphere countries, the weather is generally much warmer at this time of year than in North America or Europe. Head south both to escape the cold and to have the adventure of a lifetime. Los Roques Archipelago National Park, Venezuela. Top 10 Destinations for Independent Travelers in 2011.

Editor’s Note: In gearing up for the announcement of the Top Destinations for Indie Travelers in 2014 on Janary 2, we thought it would be fun to republish all the top destination articles from the past 6 years. The article below is our list for 2011 and was originally published on January 3, 2011. Can't wait to find out who made this year's list? The start of a new year means lots of people are making lists – travelers are jotting down notes of the places they want to go, and at BootsnAll we’re publishing our 4th annual list of the 10 destinations we think independent travelers should consider visiting.

It’s a perfect match, don’t you agree? This year, as in the past two years, we solicited nominations from readers like you as well as from BootsnAll staff members, but unlike in previous years there were actually some BootsnAll articles that inspired our choices for 2011. One of the biggest misconceptions of international travel is that most people cannot afford it. While there are certainly places in the world that are difficult to travel to without a six-figure salary, there are also plenty of others where just about anyone can go. Wanna add these countries to your long-term trip itinerary? Looking away from the typical North American and European vacations, one can find other regions around the world where it’s not only possible, but rather easy, to travel on the cheap.

Many travelers can get away for a week, and sometimes two, for under $500US for the on-the-ground expenses, including accommodation, food, drinks, activities, and transportation (excluding airfare to and from your hometown). If you’re planning a long-term trip and looking for itinerary ideas, we added multi-stop route examples for each destination on this list. Thailand Here’s a multi-stop trip that includes Thailand – a short, 2-week RTW trip for under $2000USD.
