Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre. Self Hatred and the Morning Person. I got up this morning at the usual time and rushed through my weekday morning routine.
I’ve been doing the same thing every day for the last 3 years: shower, hair, makeup, clothes, and shoes, fly out the door just in time to make it to the office by 8. Getting ready in the morning has always been like a nightmare for me, ever since I was a kid. I’ve always hated my body, and squeezing into clothes makes me self conscious. Staring myself in the face without makeup makes me uncomfortable. Putting on my hand-me-down jewelry that isn’t quite fashionable embarrasses me.
Up until recently, if you asked me if I’m a “morning person” I would always say NO. There are a number of factors that led to my self-hatred. For most of my life I sincerely believed that I was stupid, worthless, ugly, lazy, gluttonous, and sloppy. I don’t know exactly when it happened, but at some point this last year the heavy fog of depression, anxiety, and self hatred started to dissipate.

There’s a whole range, from old stalwarts (Delia’s How to Cook, Volume Two – the lack of volumes one and three suggest I’ve pilfered this one from the parentals) to tricksy stuff not to be attempted by the faint-hearted (Thomas Keller) and trendies (Hawksmoor, Thomas Selby, Polpo) via a host of reference books (if you’re into food and don’t already have a copy of The Flavour Thesaurus, rush out and get one now. How to keep moving forward, even when your brain hates you. If you’ve been around here long, or if you know me in person, you probably know I have a slightly defective brain, which is to say that I have a history with clinical depression.
Add on to that a(n un-)healthy dose of perfectionism, and you have an expert procrastinator. I can miserably waste a day (and yes, if you didn’t get anything useful done OR even enjoy yourself a little, that was a day wasted) with the best (worst?) Of them. But I’ve been at the depression game for 10+ years now, and the perfectionism for 20+ (I distinctly remember bawling over imperfect crayon drawings. Started young.), and I’ve had to somehow manage to get stuff done. So ever so slowly, I’ve built myself a toolbox full of tricks to keep myself going, regardless of how I feel or what my jerkbrain is yammering on about at the moment. Let hard things be hard. Be kind to yourself. And really, just stop saying “should” to yourself about your thoughts and feelings in any context.

Background. Food co-ops toolkit. More and more communities are setting up food co-ops so they can get good food at an affordable price and have more control over where their food comes from.
Co-operation is all about two or more people joining forces and working together to achieve something they probably couldn't do on their own. In the case of food co-ops a group of people join forces in order to be able to buy foods they may otherwise find it hard to get hold of at a price they can afford. By volunteering their time and pooling their buying power they can get produce direct from local farmers or wholesalers. This toolkit was produced as part of the Big Lottery funded Making Local Food Work programme to help more communities set up their own food co-ops and buying groups.
It was produced by Sustain in partnership with Somerset Community Food, London Food Link, Newham Food Access Partnership, Greenwich Co-operative Development Agency, Food Chain North East, F3 and Co-operatives UK.
