Married …with dinner » Blog Archive » Stalking the sweetly sour. Stalking the sweetly sour Rhubarb when raw is so tough And its leaves contain poisonous stuff,- But when cleaned and de-soiled- Dipped in sugar and boiled Then the stalks are quite tasty enough.- — The Rhubarb Compendium This month’s CanJam challenge — hosted by Toronto Tasting Notes — offers not one but two options for us to put up: Asparagus or rhubarb.

Given that I’d used the former in last month’s project (the theme was herbs, and I made tarragon asparagus pickles), my path was clear. I know that some of my friends (including both of the people who I consider my pie gurus) will disown me when I admit this, but I’m not generally a fan of rhubarb’s texture; I just can’t tolerate the usual sliminess. I love its tart fruitiness, so I’ve learned a trick or two for keeping it firm in desserts, but canning it in a water bath — the whole point of the CanJam — would undo all of those careful preparations. In a medium saucepan, bring the sugar and water to a simmer, stirring to dissolve.

It was in this place of higher learning that I discovered that watermelon soaks up vodka like a dry sponge. Back then, drinking was much more a means to an end, so proof was often important that palate, and yet somehow, vodka soaked watermelon managed to bring on the tipsy without sacrificing taste.

Fast forward a dozen years, and booze soaked watermelon is still one of my favorite endings to a summer picnic. It pacifies my sweet-tooth without weighing me down with a ton of butter and sugar. While it isn’t a traditional Brazilian Caipirnha, all the flavours are there, and I love how the vegetal notes in the Cachaça compliment the green basil and cucumber-like flavor of the watermelon. Enjoy! Mojito recipe. After years and years of Tequila being king (or queen) of summer in our house, things are changing a bit. At least for me. My best friends, The Casadores Sisters, might be a bit alarmed to hear this but I’ve been enjoying the refreshing taste of rum lately as my summer beverage of choice. We got reacquainted on my most recent trip to Florida where I rediscovered its appeal after stumbling into a rum tasting at the resort hotel I was staying at.
