Prompted by a few cartomancers in the Lenormand Cards Study Group on Facebook to write something about my method of reading the Lenormand Grand Tableau, here’s a sample reading I did recently (if you read the text make sure that you also read the comments at the end.

The cards are an abbreviated language like shorthand, so when they come together the spell something out based on their distance from each other and what they fall with. That’s what “traditional” Lenormand is: it’s not the deck, or the meanings, but a method of reading these thirty-six playing cards. If you’re looking for books, check out Caitlín Matthews “The Enchanted Lenormand” or Erna Droesbeke’s “The Oracle of Mlle. Lenormand” (available in Dutch, German and French – it was the first Lenormand book in English, coming out in 1989, and you can sometimes pick it up on eBay, Abebooks).

The deck was later named after the famous French fortune-teller Marie Anne Adelaide Lenormand (1772-1843). The board game used a traditional Southern German playing card deck of 36 cards with new illustrations on each card that were laid out in a 6x6 formation, a typical formation for gambling board games similar to Mexican Lotería now known in Germany as Bilderlotto (picture lotto). "The Secrets Of The Lenormand Oracle" introduced her innovative approach to reading the cards called the 'No Layout' system. Her presence on the web and her free teachings on Aecletic Tarot and Lenormandnz forum created a lot of controversy since the traditional way to reading the deck was layout based and mainly relying on a large spread called le Grand Tableau. However for many Lenormand devotees, her approach to the oracle added a new swing to its history and started a resurgence of interest around the Lenormand in the Anglo-Saxon countries that knew little about this oracle while creating excitement in Western Europe.
