Decius Responds to Critics of "The Flight 93 Election" - American Greatness. Reposted with permission from The Claremont Review of Books. Well, that was unexpected. Everything I said in “The Flight 93 Election” was derivative of things I had already said, with (I thought) more vim and vigor, in a now-defunct blog. I assumed the new piece would interest a handful of that blog’s remaining fans and no one else. My predictive powers proved imperfect. Which should cheer everyone who hated what I said: if I was wrong about the one thing, maybe I’m wrong about the others. First is the objection to anonymity and specifically to the pseudonym.
Second is the objection to my invoking Flight 93. Some also complained about the aptness of the analogy: the plane crashed! A third objection is that Trump is immoderate in the Aristotelian, or personal, sense and I don’t take that into sufficient account. For this objection to be decisive, Trump’s personal immoderation would have to be on a level that aspires to tyrannical rule.
A point from the earlier essay is worth repeating. Populism has long been a dirty word to neoreactionaries, but this disdain misses a certain hidden element to populist movements, one that at its core sows the seeds for building a new elite and restoring hierarchy.
There is an esoteric element to populism we ought to keep in mind and exploit for our own goals. Reading a hidden meaning into mass movements at first seems counterintuitive, or even contradictory, but there is a hidden meaning and recognizing it will move us out of our egalitarian-multicultural swamp and towards a properly ordered society. Ultimately, all of history is made by elites. Often times, in this sort of proxy war, elites simply exploit building resentment among certain groups. Populist movements and populist sentiment often have genuine complaints against governing elites.
A mass fever might birth a movement, but it will never sustain it. New elites are built in times of crisis. The Alt-Right Has Been Vindicated – Occidental Dissent. Recent events have vindicated the Alt-Right 1.) First, you have Ford building plants in Mexico and moving small car production out of Michigan to Mexico. 2.) Second, you have refugees or the children of refugees launching terrorist attacks in Orlando, St. Cloud and New York/New Jersey. 3.) 4.) 5.) 6.) 7.) 8.) 9.) 10.) 11.) As a rule, everyone in the Alt-Right loves Hitler to some extent, given that he was the last great leader of Europe and the one who almost took down the Jews for good. Let us consider the five types of Neo-Nazis. Ironic Nazis – This group of Neo-Nazis uses imagery of Nazism and claims to be Nazi because it’s funny and upsets Jews and cucks.

To ordinary conservative ears, this sounds histrionic.
Not to pick (too much) on Kesler, who is less unwarrantedly optimistic than most conservatives. But let us back up. Conservatives spend at least several hundred million dollars a year on think-tanks, magazines, conferences, fellowships, and such, complaining about this, that, the other, and everything. Yet we may also reasonably ask: What explains the Pollyanna-ish declinism of so many others? More to the point, what has conservatism achieved lately? I’m Alt Right, and You Should Be Too at Faith and Heritage. Dear Mom and Dad, You may have heard about the ‘Alt Right’ from Hillary’s speech today.
I know that you raised me to never think ill of other groups like blacks, gays, or Jews, and that you’ve always spoken well of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights movement, and that you think the Bible tells us that we white Christians have to take in refugees no matter what. Mom and Dad, you’re wrong – and I’m Alt Right. You think being Alt Right is bad – on the basis of a Hillary Clinton speech? When did the Clintons become the arbiters of truth around here? Mom, I was only a kid at the time, but I remember you tsk-tsking Bill Clinton’s philandering and womanizing when he was President. Whatever happened to critical thinking? I’m Alt Right because I believe that I and your grandchildren have the right to exist in a country that exists for them and is governed by them.
