Fair Trials International: Cases : Benny Wenda

I am not the criminal, Indonesia is. - Benny Wenda Benny Wenda is a West Papuan tribal leader who leads an international campaign for the independence of West Papua from Indonesia. Due to his activities he was persecuted by the Indonesian government, subjected to torture and a politically-motivated prosecution. He escaped to the UK and was given asylum in 2002. Benny is now a British citizen and lives with his wife and six children in Oxford. In 2011, Benny discovered that Interpol had listed a “red notice” against him following a request from the Indonesian police. Benny’s case demonstrates how Interpol (an international organisation of national police forces) is being abused by oppressive and undemocratic regimes to pursue political opponents.

FREEPORT McROWAN Copper & GOLD. What’s Behind Violence at the World’s Largest Gold Mine? Rights groups are calling on Indonesia to investigate the fatal shooting of gold and copper mine workers in eastern Indonesia. In a gruesome escalation of a dispute between U.S. -based Freeport-McMoRan and workers from their Grasberg mine, security forces opened fire on a crowd of strikers, killing one man and injuring more than a dozen others. “This latest incident shows that Indonesian police have not learned how to deal with protesters without resorting to excessive, and even lethal, force,” said Amnesty International’s Sam Zarifi in a statement published online. “The authorities must launch an independent and impartial investigation into this tragedy.” The violence, though tragic, is hardly surprising. The fight at Grasberg is, in many ways, about the fight for Papua itself. Papua New Guinea plane crashes, toll unknown. Comprising the western half of the Papua New Guinea island; the province has been ruled from Indonesia since 1963, when the UN, with the proviso that the native Papuans be given the chance to decide their own fate, transferred power to that country. In 1969, the ‘Act of Free Choice’ gave 1,064 Indonesian appointed Papuan officials the chance to decide whether or not to become independent or remain part of Indonesia. Unsurprisingly, they chose the latter. West Papua: Stop the Slow-Motion Genocide. Benny is to West Papua what Nelson Mandela is to South Africa - a freedom fighter, a tireless advocate for justice and an inspirational ambassador for his people. We sat and chatted with Benny for hours, and what came across was that he is fiercely passionate in his views, but also that he is unbelievably humble and has a great sense of humour and incredibly infectious giggle. Benny also walks with a limp, the result of violence by the Indonesian military that he was subjected to as a child. Papuans will continue to risk their lives until the world tak.

1962 New York Agreement - Wiki

Signed at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 15 August 1962, it ended a territorial dispute existing between the two countries since the Indonesian War of Independence in 1949. The United States, seeking to prevent a potential opening for the Soviet bloc, had mediated between the two countries pressuring the Netherlands to accept a brief administration by the United Nations before the administration was entrusted to Indonesia pending an "act of self-determination". In 1969 Indonesia conducted an event called the act of free choice as its execution of the "act of self-determination" defined in the New York Agreement. Background[edit] —Colonization advocate P. Act of Free Choice - Wiki. Act of Free Choice (Indonesian: Penentuan Pendapat Rakyat, PEPERA) was an event in July to August 1969 by which Indonesia asserts that the Western New Guinea population decided to relinquish their sovereignty in favor of Indonesian citizenship.

The Act of Free Choice was a vote by 1,025 men selected by the Indonesian military in Western New Guinea, who were asked to vote by raising their hands in a display for United Nations observers. The event was noted by the United Nations in General Assembly resolution 2504 (XXIV) without qualification whether it complied with the authorizing New York Agreement, and without qualification whether it was an act of "self-determination" as referred to and described in United Nations General Assembly resolutions 1514 and 1541 (XV) respectively.
