British Land Seeks Injunction to Keep ‘Occupy’ Protests Away

Nov. 4 (Bloomberg) -- A unit of British Land Plc applied for a court order to stop Occupy London protesters camped outside St. Paul’s Cathedral from moving onto its property. The lawsuit was filed at a London court Nov. 2 by Broadgate Estates Ltd., a property-management firm that runs sites including Paternoster Square, where Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and the London Stock Exchange Group Plc have offices, and Broadgate Circle, which houses UBS AG operations. Occupy London protesters, inspired by a similar campaign in the U.S. targeting Wall Street, have pitched more than 200 tents outside the cathedral and set up camp in Finsbury Square in the city’s financial district. The Cathedral's position on the occupation will be crucial for its future. Will it remember Christ's mission to free the oppressed and bring good news to the poor? This article is part of a series on the #Occupy movements. The ‘occupy’ movement is, I think, here to stay. Of course I may be wrong, but it doesn’t feel that way. Some, including in the Guardian, have suggested St Paul’s has played a strong hand, especially when Rev Cano Giles Fraser told the police they were not needed to defend the cathedral - but I have strongly disagreed. Before I go on, I should declare three things. The first and most important of those issues is, as far as I am concerned, what faith demands in this situation.

To the Occupy movement – the occupiers of Tahrir Square are with you. Having received so much advice from you about transitioning to democracy, we thought it's our turn to pass on some advice. Indeed, we are now in many ways involved in the same struggle. What most pundits call "the Arab spring" has its roots in the demonstrations, riots, strikes and occupations taking place all around the world, its foundations lie in years-long struggles by people and popular movements. The moment that we find ourselves in is nothing new, as we in Egypt and others have been fighting against systems of repression, disenfranchisement and the unchecked ravages of global capitalism (yes, we said it, capitalism): a system that has made a world that is dangerous and cruel to its inhabitants. An entire generation across the globe has grown up realising, rationally and emotionally, that we have no future in the current order of things.

Second Occupy London camp forms at Finsbury Square

A group of protesters with placards marched from St Paul's to the new site, where up to 30 tents had been discreetly pitched earlier. Within minutes, supporters of Occupy London had called a "general assembly" at the site in Finsbury Square, Moorgate, and declared that the square was a second occupation after the cathedral. Organisers insisted, however, that the second site would not replace St Paul's, but alleviate pressure at an increasingly crowded venue.
