The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed that on November 25, the day after Thanksgiving, which is known as Black Friday, there were 129,166 requests for background checks that are required to purchase a gun in the US, a third more than the previous record of 97,848 in 2008. The actual number of firearms sold was likely much higher since a buyer can buy more than one weapon with a single background check. “We do not have an explanation for the increase,” AFP quoted an FBI official as saying on Friday. However, some argue that the surge is partly because of the troubles the US economy is facing and the subsequent impact on the country's criminal justice system.
