Windows Embedded Compact 7 is in orbit with ARM - ARM Community
Microsoft formally announced their Windows Embedded Compact 7 product which marked “ 15 years of leadership and innovation ” in Embedded. The release happened at Embedded World - the European show for Embedded - on the same day ARM started our Embedded Community . In less than a month, events multiplied to show what this often called WinEC7 (WinCE7) is about. And today, Microsoft with Direct Insight , Freescale , Texas Instruments and Arrow invited everyone to Microsoft Campus in Reading, UK. Let’s take a look back and also forward…Traditional planar chip design (left) and Intel's new Tri-Gate technology (right). The company believes that 3D transistors perform more efficiently Intel has unveiled its next generation of microprocessor technology, code named Ivy Bridge. The upcoming chips will be the first to use a 22 nanometre manufacturing process, which packs transistors more densely than the current 32nm system.

ARM's chip designs are used in more than 90% of the world's smartphones. UK chip designer ARM has unveiled a new processor, which should allow manufacturers to make cheaper smartphones. The company hopes the Cortex A7 will enable a mobile computing revolution in developing countries where current technologies are often unaffordable. Apple is also known to make use of ARM-designed chips in its mobile devices, although it has historically been reluctant to say so publicly. Smaller and cheaper Used as the sole processor in a smartphone, the A7 is said to offer comparable power to current chips at a fraction of the price, while consuming much less battery power.
